3 Background Vietnam is rich in renewable energy potential, especially wind energy. The energy demand is growing and alternatives to conventional energy sources are becoming increasingly important. German companies have growing interest in Vietnam. They are leading in renewable energy technologies and offer high quality products and services:  Solid tradition of mechanical engineering and craftsmanship  High efficiency and quality standards  Long-term experience from strong domestic markets The „renewables – Made in Germany“ initiative brings both sides together.

4 The „renewables – Made in Germany“ Initiative In 2002 the German Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi) launched the „renewables – Made in Germany“ initiative in order to  promote renewable energy technologies as a feasible alternative to conventional power generation  support German companies seeking to provide their products and services to global markets The German Chambers of Commerce (AHK) and the GIZ Project Development Programme (PDP) implement the initiative in Indonesia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia.

5 Approach I Quality and standards of renewable energy technologies AND well-prepared and professional project planning are the key factors for sustainable investments and a reliable and secure energy supply. We need...  reliable data for project site selection  performance-oriented project planning  quality awareness for choice of components  standards and safety priority... to ensure  successful completion of projects  expected IRRs  future funding and financing  attractive business  competitiveness  sustainable market developments  acceptance  minimized harm to humans and environment

6 Approach II The „renewables – Made in Germany“ initiative supports quality oriented market development through:  Facilitating and supporting business partnerships between Vietnamese and German companies  Facilitating technology and know-how transfer  Awareness-raising for the benefits and variety of applications of renewable energy technologies  Advice for an improvement of regulatory framework conditions

7 Activities and Services Publications and expert lectures: RE market potentials and possible applications in Vietnam know-how and services of German companies Match-Making during business trips of German companies to Vietnam Business and delegation visits to Germany Information Dissemination and Business Partnerships Support to business partners for the realisation of lighthouse projects Trainings and know-how transfer between local and German companies Support to Lighthouse Projects Marketing and awareness-raising campaigns Support to RE associations Policy advice Sustainable Market Development
