2 Open your textbook to p 74. Read Spain Reacts section “The Spanish had learned that they would need to pay more attention to Texas if they wanted to control it.” How could Spain control the land?

3 Ch 4 Section 1 Missions and Presidios What is a Mission? What did the Spanish hope to accomplish with the mission/presidio system? Did any succeed/fail?

4 Notes continued… Missions – settlements in Indian territory – Started by Friars (church leaders) – Taught Indians Christianity Language Customs Farming methods Hoped Indians would become loyal subjects of Spain = (Behave!!!)

5 Notes continued… Mission system had worked in Mexico Missions paid for by Spain, after farming was successful Missions would pay for themselves.

7 San Francisco de los Tejas Established near present day Crockett, Texas. Caddo Indians Lasted 3 years Spanish gave Caddo diseases. Caddo thought disease was from baptism water. Caddo didn’t need Spanish, They were doing fine!

8 Los Adaes Near modern Texas/Louisiana border Help Spanish watch out for French French raided mission, finding nothing but chickens. Missionaries/Soldiers retreated back to San Antonio de Valero

11 Santa Cruz de San Saba Near Present-Day Menard Texas Built for Lipan Apaches Apaches would convert if Spanish would protect them from Comanche. Mission built in Comanche territory…Lipan wanted to start a war between Spanish and Comanche. Comanche attacked in 1758 and killed missionaries and burned down mission.
