4 Corpus Christi de Ysleta Established: 1682 Problems: Lack of support from Spain Lasting Results: 1 st permanent settlement of Europeans in TX Located a few miles from present-day El Paso

5 The French… 1682 – La Salle sails down & claims the Mississippi River for France. 1685 – La Salle & colonists built Fort St. Louis in Texas. 1 st threat from France.

6 San Francisco de los Tejas Established: 1690, by Father Massanet Problems: Drought ruined crops Disease killed Indians & Friars Indians rejected Catholic religion & Spanish attempts to change their way of life. France not a threat and mission cost too much money.

7 San Francisco de los Tejas Lasting Results: 1 st attempt to settle East Texas. Mission failed & Indians blamed Spanish for their problems. Spaniards realized that a mission needed presidios & Spanish families. Back to Map

14 Los Adaes 1719: France & Spain go to war 3 rd threat from France – French soldiers seized a Spanish mission near Nacogdoches. Los Adaes established by Aguayo (Spanish governor of TX & Coahuila province)

15 Los Adaes Established:1719 Problems: Mission located in Louisiana (near Natchitoches) *Louisiana is French territory. Lasting Results: First unofficial capital of TX

23 San Xavier (3 missions) Established: 1748-1751 Problems: Comanche & Apache Raids, Drought,Small pox & Measles Lasting Results: Served the Tonkawas 2 missions abandoned; 1 moved closer to San Antonio Helped expand the road system. Near present-day Rockdale Back to Map

24 San Saba Established: 1757 Problems: Indian raids; Mission destroyed by Comanches Apaches wouldn’t stay in mission – only visited Apaches wanted protection from the Comanches Lasting Results: Mission failed
