Opening Prayer:
Dear Father, all the gifts you give me are free from your loving hand. Forgive me for the times I have misused them, especially the gift of my family and home and the things you’ve given me. Make me sure of my forgive-ness to use these things to show my love for you. Help me to see everything I have, from my body to my money, as yours. Then, use your Word to guide me in how I can use them all for you. Help us grow close to you in this study. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

2. THE SIXTH COMMANDMENT:
Love for God’s Gift of Marriage & Family
As a family you have probably attended a wedding. Perhaps it was a close relative or family friend. In that service the bride and groom made a promise to each other. Do you or your youth remember some of the words of that promise? (to be faithful to each other until death) The bride and groom then exchange rings. What do the rings symbolize? (never-ending circle=never-ending marriage bond)
The bride and groom promise the gift of themselves, the gift of their sexuality to each other for the rest of their lives in marriage. In the Sixth Commandment God says: “You shall not commit adultery.” God does not
want us to have sexual relations/intercourse outside the marriage relationship of a man and woman. What does God teach us in the 6th Commandment?

3. WHAT GOD WANTS US TO KNOW

4. Genesis 1:27
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Have youth read this passage.
In this verse we are told that God not only created humankind in His image or likeness, He created them “male and female”. God provided for the origin or beginning of our human sexuality. God gifted us differently in our sexuality. The plan God has is that the sex drive be a strong, healthy desire to become interested in other people as you grow up. As this drive functions properly we grow up out of the body stage of being only interested in ourselves and our parents and the next meal on the table and become conscious of our personality and personalities around us.

6. Genesis 2:18, 22-24
18 The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."
22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.
    23 The man said,    
    "This is now bone of my bones
    and flesh of my flesh;
    she shall be called 'woman,'
    for she was taken out of man."
24For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.
Have youth read vs 18.
Genesis chapter 2 expands certain aspects of Genesis chapter 1. In chapter one God records after each day of creation that everything He made was “good”. This is the first time the Bible says that something is “not good”.
Ask youth: According to vs. 18 what was “not good”? Answer: It was not good for Adam to
Be alone.
Ask: What does God say He will do? Answer: I will make a helper suitable for him”; in other words, I will make a helper who will complement him; one who will work well with him.
Have youth read verses
God remedies man being alone by creating a woman “out of the man”, for literally woman means “out of the man”. Now man was not alone. God created woman from man, for man, and out of the man. In vs. 23 man voices his joy that he is no longer alone but has another human being so similar to him. In vs. 24 God tells us how marriage got its start.
Note how God describes the steps that lead to marriage.
Man and (implied) woman leave their parents and become united. They become one flesh. God designed marriage to bond two people into one new entity (Bible picture of Jesus and His bride, the church, as bonded together into one body.) This sexual union is to bring joy and pleasure both to husband and wife without guilt or fear. To make it even more wonderful, sexual love is God’s way of giving a start to new human life. Through sexual love a husband fertilizes tiny egg cells inside his wife’s body to begin the development of a brand new individual or person.

7. What God Wants Us To Know

8. A CHRISTIAN WILL NOT WANT TO
Illustration:
If the Milton Bradley Company asked you to create a new game, you would have the right to make the rules and guidelines by which the game is played. That way the gave serves its intended purpose and is played the way it’s supposed to be played. God created marriage, and he also made the rules, or guidelines, for it so that
marriage would serve its intended purpose and the man and woman would be happy in the marriage. God’s rules say that only one man and one woman are to participate in a marriage. Any variation, such as two men or two women or one man and two women or one woman and two men, breaks God’s rules for marriage and so is an abomination in his sight.

9. 1 Corinthians 6:9-10
9Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders 10nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
Parent and Youth read these two verses together.
A Christian is different than the person of this world. A Christian knows God takes sin seriously. Note not once “but twice” the Apostle underscores that the wicked “will not inherit the kingdom of God.” One Bible scholar calls this list of sins: “the solemn roll-call of the damned.” God’s message was clear in the 1st Century and it is clearly intended for us in the 21st Century.

10. A Christian Will Not Want To
1. Commit sinful sexual acts and be immoral.
Adultery = sexual relations with someone besides one’s spouse
Fornication = sexual relations between unmarried persons
Homosexuality = sexual relations with one of the same sex

Sin attacks God’s best gifts the hardest. And that’s why we share with our youth that our flesh will tell us more lies about sex and our sexuality than about anything else. The world in which we live will be doubly quick to support immorality. (By immoral we understand one to be inconsistent in living a pure and decent life)
Adultery is a narrower sense here speaking to those who are married and becoming sexually involved with another person or having an affair.
Fornication – this is understood that young couples can explore sexual relations before they are married. Pastorally we come into contact with many couples who look for a church to be married in after they have moved in together in a town-house or apartment.
“Homosexuality” -- people are more open today to promote an agenda contrary to God’s will—that sexual relations of man to man or woman to woman(lesbianism) is an acceptable relationship.

11. Ephesians 5:3-4
3But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people. 4Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving.

Another common practice to downgrade sex and sexuality by the way we speak about it. It is easy to portray: “Sex is dirty!” Sex and sexuality as God has gifted us is not dirty. It is our “flesh” which is sinful and dirty and seeks to misuse this gift of God. Our “flesh” loves to color sex with all kinds of jokes and inappropriate stories.
Our “flesh” has a powerful appetite which opens the door to pornography and its agenda.

13. Matthew 5:28
28But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
Have youth read this passage.
In His Sermon on the Mount Jesus pointed out that people not only outwardly commit adultery but can also commit this sin internally: that is, in their hearts.
Example: Mike saw Michelle walking down the sidewalk. He noticed she was rather attractive. His mind started examining different aspects of her sexuality. He began to let lust grow in. He commented to Peter: “I’d sure like to get into bed with her.”
We can go to other side and ask: “What is appropriate or inappropriate clothing?”
We live in era an where there appears to be little restraint to discourage the use of sex and sexualty – that opens the door to lust and its related passions.
When interference takes place one is branded as “old-fashioned” and out of step with the times.

17. Application
Agree or disagree: God doesn’t want us to talk about sex or think about sex.
Disagree: It’s not wrong for us to talk about sex. It’s how we do it that makes it right or wrong. If we talk or think about sex in a gross or dirty way, then it’s wrong.
It’s important to remember that sex is a gift of God, not something the devil gave us. But the devil will always try to ruin God’s gift by having us talk about or think about this gift in a way that is sinful.

19. John 14:15 15“If you love me, you will obey what I command.

The story is told of a student who went away to college. One weekend his mother decided to visit him. When she came to his room she was surprised by all the inappropriate pictures he had on display from pornographic magazines. But she didn’t say a word.
About a week later she wrote him a letter and at the close make one request. Would he put up this picture of Jesus in his room. He obliged.
Then something happened. One by one he began taking the pictures down because it did not seem right to have them up in the presence of the Savior. Finally—all the inappropriate pictures were removed.
That’s the power of God’s love at work. We need to expose ourselves to the Love of God as we speaks in His Word. The more we do the more we will want to reflect Him in our lives that involve issues of our sexuality and marriage.

21. 2 Timothy 2:22
 22Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

What action are we to take when it comes to temptation?
Answer: Flee; run away. Why? Because God wants us to avoid people and everything that tempts us to sin against this commandment.
Illustration: In order to discolor a whole jug of water, all you need is one drop of red food coloring. In order to make a person’s whole being impure, only one part needs to be soiled. Keep your eyes, ears, and bodies pure.
Follow this advice: Jean Marie says: “The best gift I can give my husband on our wedding night is my virginity.” This is not only a God-pleasing gift, it is also God’s will that she do so. And there will be there will be other gifts—companionship, desire to make their marriage a happy one, and so on.

23. Genesis 24:1-4
1 Abraham was now old and well advanced in years, and the LORD had blessed him in every way. 2 He said to the chief servant in his household, the one in charge of all that he had, "Put your hand under my thigh. 3 I want you to swear by the LORD , the God of heaven and the God of earth, that you will not get a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I am living, 4 but will go to my country and my own relatives and get a wife for my son Isaac."
Parent read this passage.
And share: In this Bible section Abraham wanted to provide a godly wife for his son Isaac. Having moved to Canaan he knew he lived among unbelieving Canaanites. He also remembered that his extended family back in Ur of the Chaldees were God-fearing.
Question: Where did Abraham want his servant to find for Isaac?
Answer—his own country and relatives. Direction implies concern for her spiritual background.

25. Matthew 19:6
6So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate.”

The Pastor shares this Bible truth in the wedding service as he Announces: “By their promises Jon and Wendie have bound themselves before God and these witnesses, therefore I declare they are husband and wife in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Those whom God has bound together
let no one separate.”
God intends marriage to be a life-long union. It ends when one of the spouses die. Again spouses promise
faithfulness as long as they live.

27. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.

Our human body is the dwelling place for God’s Holy Spirit. Once Jesus came and lived in this world. He carried out His mission and died on the cross to pay for all our sins. He redeemed so that we might be His own sons and daughters. Yes, the Spirit reminds us that we belong to Jesus.
We ask ourselves how we can bring praise and honor to Him.
The answer is: As God gifts us with our human body—so we want to use it as He intends—we want to use His gifts of sexuality and marriage that bring Him praise and honor.

29. THE SEVENTH COMMANDMENT:
Love for the use of God’s Gift of Possessions
You shall not steal.
What does this mean?
We should fear and love God that we do not take our neighbor’s money or property, or get it by dishonest dealing, but help him to improve and protect his property and means of income.

God entrusts us with the care of all things He has made. God gives each person certain possessions for the needs of daily life. We are to be stewards or caretakers (administrators), who are responsible to God for the way we use his gifts.

1. God owns all money and possessions and distributes them to us and to others.
2. We are to remember that we are stewards (caretakers/managers) of our possessions.

Illustration: Today many dairy farms are huge. Some farmers milk hundreds of cows a day. Such operations are usually not owned by a single person but by a group of people who hire one person to be the manager and run the farm for them. If this person takes a visitor out to the place he manages, he might say to him, “That’s my farm.” Would he be lying? No. What he means is that the owners have placed in control of day-to-day operations of the farm and have made him responsible for all that goes on there. So we are God’s managers or stewards or caretakers or administrators. And while we may speak of the possessions God has placed in our hands as “ours,” yet we are responsible to him for how faithfully we handle or use the gifts and possessions he has given us.

Answer: Robbery involves the use of force to obtain things.
Theft involves or suggests taking something when the other is not looking, or under cover of darkness.

37. 2 Kings 5:20-24
20 Gehazi, the servant of Elisha the man of God, said to himself, "My master was too easy on Naaman, this Aramean, by not accepting from him what he brought. As surely as the LORD lives, I will run after him and get something from him.“ 21 So Gehazi hurried after Naaman. When Naaman saw him running toward him, he got down from the chariot to meet him. "Is everything all right?" he asked. 22 "Everything is all right," Gehazi answered. "My master sent me to say, 'Two young men from the company of the prophets have just come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them a talent of silver and two sets of clothing.' " 23 "By all means, take two talents," said Naaman. He urged Gehazi to accept them, and then tied up the two talents of silver in two bags, with two sets of clothing. He gave them to two of his servants, and they carried them ahead of Gehazi. 24 When Gehazi came to the hill, he took the things from the servants and put them away in the house. He sent the men away and they left.
Scan these 5 verses.
The prophet Elisha healed Naaman, an Aramean, of his leprosy by having him wash in Jordan River.
Naaman wanted to thank Elisha and offered him generous gifts which Elisha refused. He wanted the credit for the miracle to go to the Lord.
Elisha’s servant, Gehazi had other intentions. Gehazi went running after Naaman, made up a story about Elisha
receiving some unexpected company. Naaman was delighted to hear how he could help out and provided silver and clothing. Gehazi received them and kept them for himself.
Ask: What word would describe how Gehazi obtained the silver and clothing from Naaman?
Answer: He lied and was dishonest.

38. A Christian Will Not Want To

Get things dishonestly (fraud, cheating, gambling)

There are many dishonest ways a greedy heart will itself. Talk about one or two of the following:
Shoplifting
Borrowing and not returning
Loafing on the job
Vandalism
Fraud – dishonest business dealings
Cheating
Gambling
Not stealing ourselves but helping others to steal or cheat.

Out of fear and love for God and His generous giving to us, a Christian will want to

40. 1 Timothy 5:8
8If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Ask: Who does God want us to provide for?
Answer: Our immediate family.
Illustration: Occasionally a news story spotlights some parents who have neglected their child by leaving him unattended for days on end without food or clean clothes. Everyone who hears about it is shocked. Even those who are not Christians realize what a terrible thing it is not to take care of one’s own children. How much more for believers to use their possessions to show their love for God by providing for t heir own families and relatives.

17If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?

Ask: Who does God want us to help via our possessions?
Answer: Our brother in need.
Illustration: God says, “If a man will not work, he shall not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10). But some people simply are not able to work—those who have a debilitating disease or those born with such severe afflictions that their bodies cannot function properly. Then, too, some people lose all their possessions through no fault of their own—because of a flood or tornado, for example. God makes it abundantly clear that he does, indeed, want us to help all those who are truly needy.

2On the first day of every week, each one of you should set aside a sum of money in keeping with his income, saving it up, so that when I come no collections will have to be made.

Ask: What does God want us to do with our possession?
Answer: Provide generous collections or offerings for church work.
The Christians in Corinth heard that the believers in the church at Jerusalem were experiencing a famine. Paul provides this instruction on how they can use their money and possessions to help them out.

44. 1 Corinthians 10:24
24Nobody should seek his own good, but the good of others.

With a thankful spirit for all God entrusts to us we use our gifts of possessions for the benefit of all those who

Jesus looked out for others. The early Christian Church looked out for others. We want to protect our neighbor’s property and work for his/her improvement.

47. 2 Corinthians 9:6-7
6Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

Paul reminds these Christians and us that a farmer plants a generous amount of seed in the Spring in anticipation of reaping a harvest in the Fall. If he limits the number of seeds he plants he knows that, in turn,
Limits the potential of harvest.
Each Christian is to give thoughtfully because he has a need to give just as a seed has a need to grow. The
Christian does this in the spirit that the Lord God gifts him/her.
Illustration: A coal truck pulls up along an older home to deliver his cargo. As the coal goes out of the shoot
Into the basement of the home a man in the basement starts shoveling coal into the furnace. The homeowner
with his shovel cannot keep up with the delivery. We can’t keep up with the delivery of material blessings God showers on us each and every day.
How do we give to the Lord? Literally – the Bible says: “God loves a hilarious giver!” The Christian responds; better – has a gut-wrenching laugh – I can’t keep up with all God gives.

48. 2 Corinthians 8:9
For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.

God is the most generous Giver!! God’s Son Jesus is the greatest Giver of all.
Ask: Why does God give?
Answer: Grace! God’s undeserved love.
Jesus gave up the glory and splendor of heaven for the squalor and poverty of this world Jesus did this –
Emptied himself of His Deity-- so that we might be made rich and enjoy the glory of God in heaven. This is
God’s Great Exchange.

God wants us to be cheerful as we plan and give generous offerings for the work of the Lord or
Church work.
Illustration: In the Old Testament, God required that his people, who had the promise of the coming Savior,
Give ten percent of all they owned to support the worship activities of the temple. In Malachi 3:8-10, God says that they were “robbing him” if they didn’t do this regularly and cheerfully. During New Testament times, God does not demand ten percent of us who have the fulfillment of God’s promises in Christ. Rather, he gives us the freedom to decide how much to give and in this way to show how much we love him. What percentage of your allowance or the money you earn on your job do you give back to God to express your thanks to him for all he has done for you? Or do you spend it all on yourself?

53. Application
Agree or disagree. Giving a needy person a handout is actually harmful because it teaches that person to be lazy.
Comment.
It depends. It’s true that if a person is lazy and doesn’t want to work, a handout may actually encourage that person in his or her sin. That’s why God says what He says in 2 Thessalonians chapter 3 (If a man will not work, he shall not eat.”) But there are also many needy people who would like to work but can’t get a job. For them a handout merely helps them out until they can take care of themselves again. As Christians we always want to put the best construction on other people’s situations and motives and external helping hands wherever we can.
