2 for any and every reason?"
DEBATE  Some Pharisees came to him to test him. They asked, "Is it lawful for a man* to divorce his wife for any and every reason?"

3 DATA “ Haven’t You Read?” “Go and learn what this means…”

4 DESIGN “At the beginning the Creator 'made them
male and female”and said, 'For this reason a man will: leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh'?  So they are no longer two, but one. Therefore what God has joined together, let man not separate."

5 The Marriage Covenant gives both parties:
equality complementary unity permanence

13 Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because
"Why then," they asked, "did Moses command that a man give his wife a certificate of divorce and send her away?“ Jesus replied, "Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because your hearts were hard.

14 DEFINITION But it was not this way from the beginning. I tell you
that anyone who divorces his wife, except for marital unfaithfulness, and marries another woman commits adultery."

15 DESPAIR Better to be single?*
The disciples said to him, "If this is the situation between a husband and wife, it is better not to marry." Jesus replied, "Not everyone can accept this word, but only those to whom it has been given. For some are eunuchs because they were born that way. others were made that way by men; and others have renounced marriage because of the kingdom of heaven. The one who can accept this should accept it."

16 MARRIAGE Since there is so much immorality, each man should have his own wife, and each woman her own husband. The husband should fulfil his marital duty to his wife, and likewise the wife to her husband. 1 Cor 7 Marriage should be honoured by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral. Hebrews 13:4

17  "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh."  This is a profound mystery—but I am talking about Christ and the church.  Each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband.  Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.  "Honour your father and mother"—which is the first commandment with a promise—  Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.

18 PASTORAL ISSUE: No. 1 Easily separate & re-marry?
To the married I give this command (not I, but the Lord): 1.A wife must not separate from her husband. But if she does*, she must remain unmarried or else be reconciled** to her husband. 2. And a husband must not divorce his wife. Are you married? Do not seek a divorce. A woman is bound to her husband as long as he lives. But if her husband dies, she is free to marry anyone she wishes

19 PASTORAL ISSUE: No. 2 If one partner becomes a Christian?
To the rest I say this (I, not the Lord): If any brother has a wife who is not a believer and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her. And if a woman has a husband who is not a believer and he is willing to live with her, she must not divorce him.  For the unbelieving husband has been sanctified through his wife, and the unbelieving wife has been sanctified through her believing husband. Otherwise your children would be unclean, but as it is, they are holy.

20 PASTORAL ISSUE: No. 3 I have become a Christian, and my marriage partner insists on separating
If the unbeliever leaves, let him do so. A believing man or woman is not bound in such circumstances; God has called us to live in peace. How do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband? Or, how do you know, husband, whether you will save your wife?

21 PASTORAL ISSUE: No. 4 I was divorced – or I was in a same-sex marriage - before I became a Christian
Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders  nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God. 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

22 PASTORAL ISSUE: No. 5 I was divorced after becoming a Christian
The ‘innocent’ party The ‘guilty’ party seek forgiveness from the Lord seek forgiveness from the ‘wronged’ ex-partner accept church’s advice

23 DESTINY Jesus left Galilee and went into the region of Judea to the other side of the Jordan. [19:1] As the time approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for Jerusalem. [Luke 9:51]

24 ,"Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery
,"Teacher, this woman was caught in the act of adultery. In the Law Moses commanded us to stone such women. Now what do you say?" They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, "If any one of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her." Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, "Woman, where are they? Has no-one condemned you?" "No-one, sir," she said. "Then neither do I condemn you," Jesus declared. "Go now and leave your life of sin." John 8
