2 7 th Grade Bell Ringers From Texas to the White House President Lyndon B. Johnson began his academic career in 1926. Johnson enrolled in Southwest Texas State Teachers' College (now Texas State University – San Marcos). He worked his way through school but from 1928 to 1929, Johnson put his studies on hold to teach Mexican-American children at the (then) segregated Welhausen School in Cotulla, south of San Antonio in La Salle County.
