4. Central Nervous System Notes Central Nervous System (CNS): “control center” of the body; consists of brain and spinal cord. Brain: controls most functions of the body Spinal Cord: links brain to Peripheral Nervous System

Central Nervous System Notes Brain: consists of three (3) parts: Cerebrum: processes sensory information, mental processes (thought: learning, remembering, judgement; conciousness); largest part of brain. Left Half: Math, Science (analytical) Right Half: Music, Art, (creativity) Cerebellum: muscle coordination & balance Brain Stem: primitive/basic involuntary activities (breathing, heartbeat, blinking eyes)

9. Peripheral Nervous System Notes Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): consists of all nerves outside of the Central Nervous System. Subdivided into the Somatic & Autonomic Nervous System. Somatic Nervous System: controls voluntary actions (ex: taking notes, writing) Autonomic Nervous System: controls involuntary actions; reflex actions (ex: blinking, breathing)

Peripheral Nervous System Notes Reflex Action: autonomic response that occurs very rapidly and without concious control; helps to protect the body; muscle and spinal cord involvement but not the brain (see transparancy). Nervous System Damage: Concussions and Spinal Cord injuries. Concussion: bruise of the brain when brain collides against skull. Spinal Cord injury: cut or crushed, resulting in paralysis (loss of movement) or death.
