2 Breast Cancer Statistics for Women A woman has a one in eight chance of developing breast cancer in her lifetime. Number one diagnosed cancer of women in the United States. Second leading cause of cancer death.

4 Breast Cancer Statistics For North Dakota Men Men can develop breast cancer too, but it occurs less frequently. There were over 22 North Dakota men diagnosed with breast cancer from 2005 to 2009. One North Dakota male will die each year from breast cancer. Diagnosis and treatment may be delayed by men. Source-North Dakota Statewide Cancer Registry

5 Are You at Risk? Risk factors include: Being a woman. Being older than 50 – the risk of breast cancer increases with age. Having a personal and/or family history of breast cancer. Genetic mutation of the genes BRCA 1 and 2. Taking hormone replacement therapy (HRT) for more than five years.

6 Signs and Symptoms Changes in skin color and/or texture

7 Signs and Symptoms Change in the size or shape of the breast

8 Signs and Symptoms Change in the appearance of the nipple

9 Signs and Symptoms Discharge from the nipple

10 Signs and Symptoms Lump or thickening in the breast

11 A change in your breast you see or feel does not mean it’s breast cancer. However, any change should be checked by a health care provider.

12 Early Detection Is Your BEST PROTECTION If breast cancer is found and treated early, the five-year survival rate is 98 percent.

14 Clinical Breast Exam A clinical breast exam is when a health-care provider looks for and feels for any changes in your breasts.

15 Mammogram A mammogram is important. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast. It can detect breast cancer two to three years before a lump can be felt.
