5 Ontario University Admission Requirements OSSD ( Ontario Secondary School Diploma ) 18 compulsory courses 12 elective courses Successful completion of OSSLT (Grade 10 Literacy Test) 40 Hours of Community Involvement (Not- for-profit organization; recommended completion date: April 18, 2014)

6 Ontario University Admission Requirements Grade 12 U/M courses ENG4U – always required 5 other Grade 12 courses, depending on the pre-requisites of the program/university Different universities might require different pre-requisites for the same program; Students must check websites/e-info/viewbooks to check requirements

8 Admission Requirement Myths grade 11 marks academic vs. applied courses (in grades 9 and 10) university/mixed/college/open courses (in grades 11 and 12) early acceptance private school marks See your counsellor for clarity on these issues!!!

9 Language Requirements must write English proficiency test if in a non-English-instructional school for less than 4 years (but should check each university website as there are differences) every institution has its own due dates and scores write early so you can re-write if necessary TOEFL iBT (www.ets.org/toefl/bulletinreg)

15 The Application Process OUAC is the clearing house for all Ontario university applications

16 The Application Process  Fee: $140 for 3 universities or programs  Each additional choice: $47 (no limit to number of choices)  Example: 2 programs at any one university = 2 choices

17 The Application Process  Limit of 3 choices at any one university including affiliated colleges  OUAC provides marks to Bishop’s. U.B.C., U. Calgary, Concordia, Dalhousie, McGill, Simon Fraser, U. Victoria, Saint Mary’s and U. New Brunswick but is not the clearing house for these universities. Apply separately to each.

21 Timelines November 7, 2014 Target date for OUAC to receive all electronic student data files from Ontario secondary high schools. NO CURRENT MARKS are sent.

22 Timelines Application Deadline: January 14, 2015 Recommended time for applications: Mid-December

23 Timelines February 3, 2015 Recommended last date for students to submit all information to the OUAC to be eligible for consideration for early admission. This is not a deadline date. Changes will be accepted and processed by the OUAC at any time

24 Timelines February 12, 2015 Deadline for the OUAC to receive, from Ontario secondary schools, all final first semester and current full-year grades for 4U/M courses

25 Timelines Timelines April 23, 2015 Third transmission OUAC of interim grades (April Report) for full-year courses

26 Timelines May 28, 2015 Last date by which all secondary school applicants shall expect a response form an Ontario University

27 Timelines June 1, 2015 The earliest date by which an Ontario University may require a response to an offer of admission and a financial commitment of any kind

28 Timelines July 7, 2015 Deadline for the OUAC to receive final grades for current semester/year courses from Ontario secondary schools

29 Offers of Admission Three Possible Admission Times 1. End of January/Beginning of February 2. End of March/Beginning of April 3. Beginning/Mid May to Late May

30 Offers of Admission End of January/Beginning of February Conditional offer based on Gr.11 and Gr. 12 courses already completed and 2013 - 2014 courses in which student is enrolled Very limited number of offers No refusals at this time

31 Offers of Admission End of March/Beginning of April Conditional offer based on completed, & posted final gr.12 marks (minimum of 3), final gr.11 marks in relevant courses and courses in which student is enrolled Generally no refusals at this time

32 Offers of Admission May 28 th Last date for offers June 1st Earliest date by which Ontario Universities may require a response

33 Conditional Offers Student must maintain a certain average as specified in the offer and/or certain grade in prerequisite courses If not all requirements have been met, the offer can be rescinded

34 Acceptances Accept Ontario offers Online *Please note that out-of-province and out-of- country may have different deadlines. Follow those acceptance procedures. Must be received at OUAC by the deadline indicated Offers may be rescinded if acceptances arrive after deadline

35 Private School Grades NSS can only record the final grade on the transcript (no mid-term grades) It is the responsibility of the private school to inform OUAC that the student is taking the course AND send mid-term grades to OUAC If the final grade is on the student’s transcript, it will be sent to OUAC with the next transmission

36 Private School Grades Reminder: Final grade must be received by NSS before June 25th otherwise it may not be recorded on the transcript before final transmission If the course is required for diploma requirements and is not on the transcript, the transcript will indicate no diploma even if the private school sends the grade to OUAC in July. The University may rescind the offer for failure to complete diploma requirements

37 Private School Grades New Ministry Policy requires that there be an indicator for private school courses on transcript TDSB uses “X” to indicate a course taken outside of full-time day school Transcript will have a “P” in the notes column.

38 Out-of-Province Applications Canadian Applications online Deadlines are student’s responsibility English language Quebec universities (McGill, Concordia, Bishop’s), Dalhousie, U.B.C., Simon Fraser, U.N.B., U.Victoria, U. Calgary & Saint Mary’s- apply after applying through OUAC - OUAC reference number required All other Canadian Universities/Colleges - student MUST inform Guidance Secretary Note: each univ. has own app. Fee ($40-$100)

39 Out-of-Province Applications American Over 4000 universities - research/deadlines are student’s responsibility Ideally, begin research in Gr.11 – Complete SAT or ACT American University Information sessions held throughout the Fall (check Guidance link at NSS website) All items, including school report, mid-term report, resume, letters of reference etc. are required 4 weeks prior to the Nov 1 (early decision) or Jan 1 (regular decision)deadlines Students need: Personal Essay, Full Transcript, and Teacher Recommendations (please look on Guidance page for Reference Letter Request and Activities Record

40 College Applications OCAS is the clearing house for Ontario College applications The Ontario College Application Services (OCAS)

41 College Application Requirements OSSD Not generally required to have 6 Grade 12 U/M courses; BUT, may be required to have certain pre-requisites, which may include grade 12 U/M courses Must check math requirements Joint degree programs WILL require 6 Grade 12 U/M courses and specific requirements

42 College Application Process Do not need a pin # to apply; OEN may be required Can apply any time after Oct 31 st Access online application at: www.ontariocolleges.ca www.ontariocolleges.ca $95 payment to apply Max of 5 choices; up to 3 programs in one college

46 College Applicants Bachelor’s Degree Programs 4-year applied degrees = practice + theory (many programs co-op) admission requirements are the same as university admission requirements - 6 Gr.12 U/M courses admission averages – sometimes lower than universities’

47 College Applicants Bachelor’s Degree Programs post-graduate programs are possible Examples  Bachelor of Applied Business, Financial Services Management  Bachelor of Applied Business, E-Business  Bachelor of Applied Technology, Construction Science & Management Employment rate after graduation – very high programs listed in the Ontario College Guide

48 College Applicants Collaborative College/University Programs Diploma + Degree Examples  Bachelor of Arts, Journalism U. of T. & Centennial College  Bachelor of Arts, Broadcasting – Radio Western & Fanshawe College Programs listed in college and university viewbooks and websites

49 College Applicants Transition Program  All colleges offer one and two year programs in General Arts and Science  Students can apply to university or other college programs after taking these programs  Application to university based on college marks  Might be granted 1 or 2 equivalency credits in university (one year program) or a full year (two year program)

51 All NSS students with IEPs are in regular program With the exception of Modified Admission (very rare), the application process and admission requirements are the same as for all other students

52 Students with IEPs Process To Seeking Services 1.Upon acceptance, contact Accessibility Center at the specific post-secondary institution to register (Do not wait until September)

53 Students with IEPs 2.Gather all medical and professional documentation required (i.e. psychological assessments, medical reports, IEPs) 3.Make an appointment for an Intake Interview

You will receive information and instructions to access eligible accommodation and services, which could include: - alternative test & examination arrangements (i.e. extra time, calculator, computer) - adaptive equipment & assistive devices - alternative format for printed materials

55 Students with IEPs FAQ’s 1.Do I need an updated psychological assessment for university? Universities generally PREFER a recent assessment. If they require a more recent assessment after reviewing your documents, they will offer interim services until new assessments are complete. Assessments could be arranged through the universities or privately.

56 Students with IEPs FAQ’s 2. Could my child receive an updated assessment in his/her Grade 12 year through TDSB? Assessing students for post-secondary purposes is not a priority for schools. There is usually a long list of Grade 9 to 11 students awaiting psychological assessments, who need immediate support.
