3 Support to Find Post-Secondary Pathways Secondary School Apprenticeship College Gap Year University Work www.postsecondaryispossible.com Never believe that a post-secondary education is not an option for you!! There are multiple post-secondary options available for students who do not have an OSSD (or who do not have marks/courses in order to apply to college and/or university). Most of these options are called access or outreach programs that offer Academic Completion and/or Transition Programs. Eligibility criteria differ for each program (ie. 19 years or older, OSSD, etc). Many of the programs are FREE or offer financial aid support. “as long as you have the aptitude, desire, and walk through the door … they will help you succeed”

4 Individual Pathways Plan (IPP) Students are expected to complete their IPP using www.myBlueprint.ca/TDSB For grade 12:  Goal setting (2 goals)  Resume & cover letter (2 achievements)  High School Planner (graduation requirements met?)  Post-Secondary Planner (rank 3 favourites)  Financial Planner (budget with 10 income & expenses)  Reflections (complete 2) Complete your IPP before your application appointment!

5 Apprenticeship earnwhileyoulearn.ca A youth-focused website by the Ontario College of Trades on apprenticeship that includes information on Ontario’s 156 skilled trades (including employment/wage info), how to become an apprentice, etc.

6 Apprenticeship Starting in secondary school: through co-operative education (OYAP) Pre-apprenticeship programs at colleges: program to help individuals interested in apprenticeship explore a trade and develop skills and job readiness to find work as an apprentice academic upgrading may also be included free program After secondary school: through the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities direct entry with an employer:www.apprenticesearch.com

7 Applying to College or University September assembly: distribute info on researching post- secondary choices November assembly: distribute info on preparing university and/or college applications November/December: completing university and/or college applications December – June: visiting post-secondary campuses, completing supplementary requirements, completing scholarship applications, completing OSAP applications, meeting all deadlines, ETC. May/June: accept college or university offers / finalize post- secondary plan

9 Applying to an Ontario University Requirements: ENG4U + five grade 12 U/M courses  program specific averages may or may not include prerequisite courses (top six 4U/4M courses)  co-op marks are not included in average  check university policy on repeated/upgraded courses  research English proficiency policy (new Canadians)  offers of admission based on semester one final and semester two mid-term marks  program may require supplementary application (essay, portfolio, audition, etc.)

10 Applying to an Ontario University Complete and hand in Release Form Attend the Ontario University Fair Attend ongoing lunchtime visits at ECI Research university websites and/or visit campuses Complete Ontario University Application Centre Working Copy (blue sheet)

11 Applying to an Ontario University Applications appointments to apply to Ontario Universities have been scheduled for you during November and December Appointment slips will be distributed today for students that submitted a release form (all other students are asked to book an appointment) Come to your appointment with a completed OUAC working copy to start and/or submit your on-line application You do not have to submit your application that day

13 Important Dates University January 14, 2015 Deadline for on-line applications to OUAC February 3, 2015 Recommended last date to submit all information to OUAC, including program changes (they will accept changes any time) May 28, 2015 Latest date by which all secondary school applicants shall expect a response from an Ontario university (an offer of admission, a refusal, or a deferral pending receipt of specific additional information) June 1, 2015 Earliest date by which Ontario universities may require a may require a response to an offer of admission and $$$$ EARLY OFFERS???

15 Applying to an Ontario College Requirements: ENG4C or 4U + grade 11/12 U/M/C courses  program specific courses will be stated  Some programs will also require entrance testing and/or interview, etc.  research English proficiency policy (new Canadians)  offers of admission based on semester one final and semester two mid-term marks  for Highly Competitive Programs colleges will use grade 11 FINAL marks if you have not completed a required grade 12 course in first semester

17 Applying to an Ontario College When you are ready to apply book an application appointment with your guidance counsellor during December and January (the application website is open now) Come to your appointment prepared to complete your on-line application! You do not have to submit your application that day

22 Transfer Options ONTransfer.ca is a service provided by the Ontario Council on Articulation and Transfer (ONCAT) to connect current and prospective students to transfer opportunities. College to University: Often the completion of a two-year diploma, with marks over 70%, will allow you to transfer into the second year of a comparable university program. University to College: Many students with either a degree or some university experience will apply for a diploma or graduate certificate to enhance their credentials.
