More Energy Efficiency is key to Pennsylvania's future  Pennsylvania lawmakers passed a measure in 2008 known as Act 129 that was aimed at curtailing energy demand, creating jobs and reducing pollution.  The Keystone Energy Efficiency Alliance commissioned a study that found 35 percent of Pennsylvania’s energy needs could be met through energy efficiency and conservation.  This Energy Efficiency Summer School Will Inspire the Next Generation of EE Researchers and Practitioners

Building Science Principles  The house is a system.  A house is a system built out of a lot of interacting components: framing, electrical, plumbing, HVAC…, each with its associated trade contractor. Mostly, the trade contractors look at a house with blinders on; they see what affects their work and not much else.

Building Science Principles  Most of us live in some kind of building, but how many actually know how buildings work? You might think that anyone who works on houses knows how houses work, but you’d be wrong. Builders and trade contractors know their part of building and repairing homes, but most lack knowledge of the fundamentals of building science.

Typical home…full of systems…  Drainage system  Foundation system  Flooring system  Wall system  Ceiling system  Roof system  Heating system  Air conditioning system  Ventilation & IAQ systems  Moisture control systems  Distribution system  Exhaust systems  Plumbing systems in/out  Electric, Appliance & Lighting systems  Energy management system Key Question: Do you know where your fresh air comes from?

Are You A Building Science Practitioner ? Exploring BPI's Building Science Principles Certificate of Knowledge

 Launched in January 2013  Knowledge based certificate  House-as-a-system building science  Not a BPI professional certification – no certification renewal  Companion Reference Guide Introducing the BSP Certificate Tiger Adolf

BSP Certificate Exam  100-question online exam verifies basic knowledge of building science  No field testing  Questions based on companion BSP Reference Guide  Take exam anytime online or at local BPI Test Center  Two hours to complete exam

BSP Companion Reference Guide  Prepares candidates for BSP exam  Accessible to broad audiences  Purchase online or printed version

 Persistent demand for knowledge based credential w/out field testing from multiple market sectors  For those who work in the building trades and need to know how homes work Why BSP certificate?

Who should hold the BSP certificate?  Contractors and installers – Home Performance/ HVAC/ Insulation/ Windows – Understand the impact of your work on the “system”  Contractor staff/ salespeople – Recognize whole house issues and advise customers  Manufacturer dealers/distributors – Understand “system” components and relationship to products and services

Who should hold the BSP certificate? (cont.)  Students – Community College/ Technical College/ Secondary School – Demonstrate knowledge of principles behind green buildings/ sustainable design

Who should hold the BSP certificate? (cont.)  Program managers Make informed decisions that impact homeowners  Energy policy regulators Reduce risk  Building departments Move beyond code (minimum standards)
