1 GREEN INITIATIVES AT IIMB Brief outline and benefits

2 1. WASTE MANAGEMENT PROGRAMME AT IIMB The Indian Institute of Management currently generates around 500 kgs of waste per day. This includes 400 kgs of food waste which is generated from households on campus, MDC, students hostels and various other food outlets. In addition to food waste – recyclable material in the form of large quantities of plastic and paper is also generated from the same sources. IIMB has a collection system whereby the waste is then collected from the generators and brought to the waste management facility which is located within the campus. Here 100 kgs of organic waste per day is converted into compost. A part of the compost generated from the food waste around 100 kgs per month is given back to the campus for its own landscaping purposes. The campus also generates a lot of leaf litter. This is collected and put in one end of the campus for slow natural composting. In addition to the management of the organic waste. All the other recyclables collected are further sorted into different waste streams like white paper, coloured paper, cups, plastic, Tetra Pak

3 2. Ground water recharge wells : IIMB has taken initiative to harvest the rain water by construction of recharge wells at catchment areas in the 100 acre campus. Recharge Wells have been provided in Campus at various locations. Totally 28 numbers of Rain water recharge wells have been put in place, with 30 feet depth and 5 feet in diameter. Each well has a capacity of 16,000 lts. The purpose of providing the recharge well is two-fold. Avoiding rain water run-offs and capturing the water at specified locations identified. Recharge the underground water table.

4 3. Rooftop Rain water harvesting Rain water is harvested by collecting the water from the roof tops of the Institute building and carried through pipes and led to filtration tanks and then stored in Underground tanks which is pumped back to the overhead tank for flushing purposes.

5 4. Use of Treated Water for Gardening purpose: ETP water supplied by M/s Strides Arcolabs is being used for horticulture purpose, thereby avoiding use of fresh water for horticulture purpose. Plumbing lines have been drawn at various points for distribution of ETP water.

6 5. Use of Biological blocks for Urinals: Biological blocks are being used in urinals thereby avoiding frequent flushing of water. The biological blocks absorb odours, kills bacteria and also gives a pleasant smell. These biological blocks will help in less water consumption at a zero maintenance, thereby saving substantial amount of water.

7 6. Solar Water Heaters: The solar water heaters have been installed in the following areas. a.All Hostel Blocks b.Quarters B, C, D,E and new quarters. c.MDC d.Hostel canteen. This is one of the main energy saving initiatives. 2 to 3 % of energy is saved with usage of solar water heaters. O an average 62,000 Ltrs of hot water is generated / day. Effectively the solar water heater reduces peak power demand to a tune of 100 KW during morning hours.

8 7. LED lighting: The LED lighting has been introduced in phased manner for Street Lights and Classrooms which has resulted in substantial power saving with more illumination. Total energy saving /day is approximately 250 Units

9 8. Bio Gas plant near Staff Canteen This plant utilizes food waste generated at Hostel canteen and Staff canteen. Per day the plant will generate bio-gas equivalent of One LPG cylinder. The manure generated from the plant can be effectively used for gardening works. With this,Waste is managed effectively and also results in Energy saving.

10 9. Solar Panels at Students Mess: Large Parabolic reflectors have been installed on the roof top of Hostel blocks. The solar energy capture by these reflectors is used to generate hot steam, which in turn is used for cooking in the Students Hostel Mess. There is saving of 25 kgs of LPG per day.

11 10. Campus Greening The phase-1 of IIMB campus greening was done during 2009, 10 different species were planted at various places in the campus. The total saplings planted were 6,058 numbers. The phase-2 of Campus greening was during 2010 with 20 different species. The saplings planted were medicinal and mixed varieties. Total of 8,578 numbers were planted at various places in the Campus.
