8. AKS Curriculum Areas: Word Study  "Word study is an alternative to traditional spelling instruction. It is based on learning word patterns rather than memorizing unconnected words.  Word study provides students with opportunities to talk about, think about, manipulate, investigate and understand patterns in words.  What does research say about word study? "Our goal is to teach our children to become word solvers. This means that as they read they can take words apart to help them in their search for meaning, and that while they write they are able to construct words from such essential elements as letters and letter clusters."
