2 An Introduction From India – have lived in US since 1993 Education - Early Childhood Certification, a MS in Computer Science, and a MA in Economics Gifted Endorsed (Certified to teach Gifted Students) 10th Year of Teaching Married for 23 years; have 2 kids Like to watch TV and movies, travel, run, play tennis, and cook for my family

5  All teachers follow the county core curriculum calendar which dictates which AKS to teach each grading period.  All teachers collaborate through weekly common planning.  Teachers create common assessments that are used to measure student progress on AKS. AKS Curriculum Framework

8 AKS Curriculum Areas: Word Study  "Word study is an alternative to traditional spelling instruction. It is based on learning word patterns rather than memorizing unconnected words.  Word study provides students with opportunities to talk about, think about, manipulate, investigate and understand patterns in words.  What does research say about word study? "Our goal is to teach our children to become word solvers. This means that as they read they can take words apart to help them in their search for meaning, and that while they write they are able to construct words from such essential elements as letters and letter clusters." (from Word Matters - Fountas & Pinnell)

11  Provided by GCPS Office of Student Accountability  Aligned to the AKS and GCPS Instructional Calendars  Function as a tool to identify gaps in students’ conceptual knowledge  Q1,Q2,Q3, and Post-Test Assessment will be 1% of Student’s grade. Benchmark Assessments Includes: Pre-Test, Q1, Q2, Q3, and Post- Test Assessments

12  Assessments in Language Arts, Math, Social Studies and Science in grades 3-5  Secure and confidential test documents so they cannot be sent home Benchmark Assessments

13  A norm-referenced test used to assess students’ abilities in reasoning and problem solving using verbal, quantitative, and nonverbal (spatial) symbols – given in grades 1, 2, 3, and 5.  Designed to help teachers expand instructional opportunities for all students.  Scores sent home with basic description of results and a website that explains the scores in detail.  Administered - September 15-17 Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT)

14  A norm-referenced test to obtain information about how the performance of Georgia’s students compare with that of students in a national sample – given in grades 2, 3 and 5  Designed to help teachers expand instructional opportunities for all students  Individual student testing report sent home  Administered - October 20-24 Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS)

15  GMAS is the new state assessment that replaces CRCT  The tentative test dates are April 21-May 1  The 5 th grade writing assessment has been discontinued, and it will be replaced with a writing component in the GMAS.  We will share more information about this new assessment as we get updates. 19 Grades/HW Grading Policy Class Work/Quizzes – 49 % Assessments including Class Tests/Projects – 49% Benchmark Assessments – 1% Progress Reports/Report Cards Parent Portal (go2.gwinnett.k12.ga.us) Mid-Term Progress Reports sent after 4-1/2 weeks; Homework Given every night - check agendas/website everyday Meant to reinforce, review, and provide practice concepts being taught in classroom Spend about 30-50 minutes a night
