TEKS for 3rd Grade (1)  Health behaviors. The student explains ways to enhance and maintain health throughout the life span. The student is expected to: (A)  explain how personal-health habits affect self and others; (D)  describe food combinations in a balanced diet such as a food pyramid;

4 What are the 6 different groups of the food pyramid??
Questions Unit Question: What are the 6 different groups of the food pyramid?? Essential Question: How important is it to follow the food pyramid daily and intake the correct amount of servings of each group???

5 Grains Oatmeal Brown rice Whole wheat flour
You need a source of grains in your everyday eating.

6 Vegetables Vary your veggies
Any kind of veggies are good. Fresh, dry, frozen, or canned vegetables. 100% Vegetable Juice .

7 Fruits Any fruits are good for you to have everyday.
You can also have 100% fruit juice. Examples: Bananas, Kiwis, Grapes, etc. Focus on Fruit!!

8 Milk All Milk products Cheese, Milk, yogurt
Should be low fat of fat free

9 Meat and Beans Meat should be lean or low fat
This category includes dry beans, eggs, nuts, and seeds.

10 Oils Canola oil, corn oil, olive oil, etc.
Some foods are high in oils already. Examples of foods with oils in them. nuts olives some fish avocados

11 Serving Sizes There are different serving sizes for each person.
9 year old boy Grains- 6 ounces Vegetables- 2.5 cups Fruit- 2 cups Milk- 3 cups Meat & Beans- 5.5 ounces 9 year old girl Grains- 6 ounces Vegetables- 2.5 cups Fruit- 1.5 cups Milk- 3 cups Meat & Beans- 5 ounces
