Ways the Br. gov’t and social welfare changed in the 1800s: A.Voting Restrictions- only property owners could vote; bribes and intimidation were common B.The Reform Bill of 1832- gave middle-class a voice in gov’t C.Social and Economic change- working conditions reform, slavery was abolished, steps toward free trade D.Chartist Movement- universal male suffrage, secret ballot, equalized parliamentary representation

3 II. Policies of Disraeli and Gladstone: A.Disraeli- focused on foreign affairs and expanding the Br. empire B. Gladstone- concerned with domestic and financial affairs
