1 What does the iPad do?  It is an iPod - Plays music, audio books, videos, televisions shows, movies  It is an Internet communications device - It can access the Internet through Wi-Fi or 3G networks  It is an E-book reader  It is a Platform for third-party apps - 100,000s of apps in categories such as: games, business, education, entertainment, healthcare, fitness, music, photography, productivity, travel, sports…..

6 GETTING STARTED What you need to get started :  Another Computer  iTunes Software  iTunes Store Account  Internet Access Turning iPad on/off  Locking iPad - It’s important to lock the device so that: You don’t inadvertently turn it on For privacy Maximize battery life

7 Multitouch Interface Training your fingers to: Tap:  - an icon to open an app  - to start playing a song or choose an album  - Double tap to zoom in Flick or Swipe:  To scroll through lists/pages  To move beyond home screen  Tap to stop scrolling Pinch/Spread:  Place two fingers on the edges of a web page….and then spread your fingers to enlarge images  Unpinch to make images smaller Drag  Slowly press your finger against the touchscreen without lifting it to move around a webpage that is too large to view on the screen

8 Virtual Intelligent iPad Keyboard  Virtual keyboards slide up from the bottom of the iPad screen  There is a separate numeric and punctuation keyboard  You see only the keys pertinent to the task  Keyboard in Safar is different from Notes (dedicated.com key in Safari)  Physical keyboard can be purchased: docking keyboard or Bluetooth keyboard  It has built-in English and foreign language dictionaries

10 Finger-Type on the Virtual Keyboards  Be patient, it may take a week or so to the hang of it  As you press your finger against a letter or number, the key darkens  If you tap the wrong one, you can slide your finger to the correct key because the letter isn’t recorded until you release your finger  Tap and hold to access special accent marks – keep your finger pressed against a letter, and a row of keys showing variations on the character for foreign alphabets pops us  If you press and hold the.com key, it offers you the choice of.com,.net,.edu, or.org  Tap the space key to accept a suggested word  Tap the suggested word to decline the suggestion

11 Finger-Type on the Virtual Keyboards Fingers or Thumbs?  Practices to see what’s comfortable for you  If you are holding the iPad, you may have to use your thumbs  If the iPad is laying on a flat surface and at a slight angle (inside case), you can use the touch method  When the iPad is in the landscape mode, it will be easier to touch type  You also have the option of a physical keyboard  Adding apostrophes – Press and hold the Exclamation Mark/Comma Key and it changes to an apostrophe

12 EDITING  Don’t get hung up over errors while you are typing  The self-correcting feature can fix many errors  Hold your finger against the screen to bring up the magnifying glass, use it to position the pointer where you need to make a correction, then backspace to delete the error  Selecting text – double-tap to select a word  Tap select to select the adjacent word or tap select all to grab everything  Tap copy to copy  Tap cut to delete  When you decide where to insert the text you just copied, tap the cursor - commands will pop up to Select, Select All, and Paste

13 Searching for Content To search for content across iPad:  Access Spotlight by flicking to the left of the main Home Screen or press the Home button  In the bar at the top of the screen that slides into view, enter your search query using the virtual keyboard  The iPad starts spitting out results….as you type the list gets narrowed  Tap a listing to jump to what you are searching for
