What Photoshop is… The best way to have control over your images A way to personalize your images A way of creating as opposed to just capturing

What Photoshop is not An all fix it tool A way to turn bad photography into good photography A substitue for actually knowing what you are doing A reason to be lazy

Principles of Photoshop… LAYERS, LAYERS LAYERS!!! –(Which we will talk about next week) There is more than one way to skin a cat –There are multiple ways to do almost everything Photoshop is VERY deep If you don’t got it, you don’t got it

The Tool’s Palette Marquee –Makes selections –Selects a part of the canvas so that you can apply changes to just that part Move Tool –If have separate layers, can place them where you want them on the canvas Lasso –Another way of making selections –Regular, polygonal, magnetic

The Tool’s Palette (cont) Magic wand –A.K.A. “tragic” wand –Make selections via separating out colors –Can choose how specific (wide, narrow gamma) Crop –Can specify parameters, dimensions, resolution Slice –Don’t need to know about this - for creating web pages

The Tools’s Palette (cont) Band Aid - Healing tool –Spot healing, healing brush, Patch –Patch is one of your most important tools for retouching Brush –Brush, Pencil, Color Replacement Stamp/Clone –Clone stamp, pattern stamp

The Tool’s Palette (cont) History/Art History Brush Eraser –NEVER USE!! Always use layer masks Paint Bucket/Gradiant –Fills in space with either a solid color, or a gradiant (gradual gradation from one color to the next) Blur –Don’t really use much* –(blur, sharpen, smudge)

The Tool’s Palette (cont) Dodge/Burn Path selection tool (don’t need to know) Text (horizontal or vertical) Pen –Very very specific selections (probably won’t use) Shape –Most useful is the “custom shape” function

The Tool’s Palette (cont) Note pad –Only need if someone else will be working with the file Eye dropper –Figure out a specific color (color sampler) –MEASURING TOOL!! Your friend! Allows you to level your photo Hand Magnifying lens

File Types RAW –Only available in some cameras –Not a way that a file can be saved JPG –Algorithm to condense information TIFF –Best way to save layered files PSD –Not real practical considering dif. versions DNG –MUST save one copy as - for future

The RAW vs. JPG debate

Why use RAW Wide range of exposure Want to batch process/bulk Changing exposures Want to play with color Saving multiple versions

When to use RAW Have unlimited storage Need to work quickly with a large number of images You actually understand the RAW dialogue box V.I.S. Very Important Shot

Why/when to use JPG Shooting snapshots Have limited storage Exposure is DEAD on accurate That’s all your camera will shoot!

Summary of Differences RAW –Need to process large groups of pictures –Have unlimited storage –Need latitude of exposure JPG –Have limited storage –Just shooting snapshots –Exposure is dead on

Basic Workflow Save/burn one set of the original files Edit shoot into what you want and what you don’t Choose the picture(s) you want to work on Open (duh) Crop (depending on your treatment)

Basic Workflow (cont) Create new layer Dust and scratches Basic retouching –Blemishes, wrinkles, distracting objects Basic Color Specialty Color Save as Tiff Save as jpg
