1 Parent Information Night September 4, 2014 Joel Stuemke 1st Grade Bee Cave Elementary

2 Introduction  Originally from Minnesota (Go Gophers!)  Graduated from Winona State University  Mass Communications (1998)  Education (2003)  12 th year teaching  7 th year teaching 1 st Grade  Married to my wife, Leigh, for 13 years  No “skin-kids,” but five wonderful “fur-kids”  Ashe (3 year old rescued greyhound)  Ollie (1 year old rescued greyhound)  Inca (17 year old Siamese mix)  Little Guy (9 year old box turtle)  Cage (3 year old classroom pet snake)  Enjoy greyhound rescue, cycling, triathlons, woodworking, and cooking (not baking)

4 Daily Five These five components of the Daily 5 program help students to build their knowledge in reading, writing, and word building / understanding.  Read to Self  Read to Someone  Listening to Reading  Work on Writing  Spelling / Word Work

5 CAFE We focus on four areas of reading. Concentrating  Comprehension  Accuracy  Fluency  Extend Vocabulary

6 Daily Schedule 7:20-7:45Arrive / Morning Work (ties in to ELA and Math) 7:45-8:00Announcements 8:00-8:25Calendar (ties into Math) 8:25-9:00English Language Arts 9:00-9:15Snack 9:15-9:55English Language Arts 9:55-10:45Specials (PE / Music / Art) 10:45-11:20English Language Arts 11:23-11:53Lunch 11:55-12:20Recess / Read Aloud 12:20-12:55Math (incl. 7 A Few Things to Remember…  Library – Thursdays @ 8:30am  Computer – Thursdays @ 1:00pm  Please provide a pair of headphones for your child.  Snack – Please send a healthy snack for your child each morning. You may send large amounts for your child to keep in their cubby.  Birthdays – Cupcakes are permitted on the last Friday of the month at 2:15pm during Fun Friday.  Specials – Our class is split in half  Odd Days: ½ go to Music / ½ go to PE  Even Days: ½ go to PE / ½ go to Music

14 Homework Routine  Monday-Friday: Read aloud with your child for 15 minutes each night and have your child write about their reading in their homework journal  Monday: Spelling choice  Tuesday: Math worksheet  Wednesday: Language Arts worksheet  Thursday: Spelling choice  Homework should be done in pencil.  I will try to get all homework out on Monday. The homework journal (with all homework – 2 spellings, math, language arts, and reading journal) is due on Friday.

15 How Do I Get Home?  If there is a change in how your child is getting home, please send a note in your child’s red folder or email me prior to the start of school. Do not e-mail me at the end of the day.  During the school day, be sure to call in any changes to the office by 1:00pm.  This will help greatly with making sure your child gets to the right place safely!

16 T-Shirts  You Can Pre-Order Tonight! Please order and pay by September 12 th so that the shirts are ready for our October field trip.  $8.00  Class will wear on Library Days, Field Trips, Field Day, and any other special days  Students and Parents are able to order

17 Field Trips  Fall – Sweet Berry Farms (pumpkins) ??  Spring – still to be decided  All parents welcome to attend, but please, no siblings!

19 Homeroom Parents Our Room Mother is still to be decided  As special events arise, our room mom would appreciate your help with volunteer efforts! Everyone’s help is greatly encouraged and appreciated!

20 Conferences  Assessments will be completed in the next few weeks.  Notes will be sent home to sign up for conference time to meet and discuss progress and goals OR you may sign up tonight for a conference time  Please remember Early Release Days are Friday, October 3 rd and Wednesday, October 8 th. Afternoons are set aside for conferences.  NOTE: Early release is at 11:45am

21 Did you know…  Our Greyhound Goal for PTO membership is 100%  We don’t do a PTO Fundraiser. Instead, we do a Un-Fundraiser. Please check in with PTO tonight about the Un-Fundraiser.

23 Performance Levels 1= Skill/Concept: Exhibits with direct assistance 2= Skill/Concept: Exhibits with minimal guidance 3= Skill/Concept: Exhibits mastery at expected level It is important to note that for each indicator on the report card, it is the Level 3 that is the goal and indicates “end-of -year” mastery for that concept or skill.
