2 The Great California ShakeOut! October 15, 2009 A first-ever statewide, earthquake drill for all residents, businesses, schools, organizations, and others Register here today or at ShakeOut.org! ShakeOut.org is being updated with details for this year’s drill and 2009 registration forms.

3 Proposed ShakeOut 2009 Goals Participation of at least 10 million people in the ShakeOut Drill Yet the ShakeOut is not only about the drop, cover, and hold on drill. It's about getting people talking, engaged, dealing with preparedness. 1,925,721 and counting! Shift the culture in California about earthquakes Shakeout allows people to make a difference in the preparedness of their community. Significant increase in earthquake readiness at all levels Survey of 2008 participants shows many preparedness actions taken by participants Home Depot sales of contents mitigation and preparedness products increase 261% from Nov. 2007 to Nov. 2008.

4 Consider what would happen in a big earthquake and what you can do now to reduce damage and recover quickly. Practice “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” Secure Your Space -Top heavy furniture -Water heaters -TVs & electronics -Vulnerable structures -Etc. Store More Water -1 gallon per person per day for at least 3 days and ideally for 2 weeks Have a Fire Extinguisher(s) -Everyone must know proper use Key ShakeOut Preparedness Messages At home, work, and school:

7 Bay Area Banner Images Needed The image size needed is at least 719 x 175 The photo area will be a horizontal format (panoramic shot) Imagery needs to be high resolution, 300 dpi or better. Color images, jpg or tif format.

8 8 Invite everyone you know to register. You can help this will be the largest earthquake drill in U.S. history! Encourage your community or employer to register, and to develop ShakeOut participation events. Businesses can post posters in customer areas and on employee bulletin boards, include flyers in paycheck envelopes, or have articles in newsletters. These materials are all at www.ShakeOut.org/resources. Add a link to www.ShakeOut.org on your website; use one of several ShakeOut web banners also available on our website. Help Promote the ShakeOut

9 April – May: Revise ShakeOut.org to be statewide, choose regional scenarios, develop regional recruitment structure, revise handouts and other promotional resources April – May: “Save the Date” notices sent to organizations, schools, government agencies, etc., who participated in 2008. Early June: Outreach to local government, ECA associates, other advocates. Secure sponsorships. Mid June: ShakeOut 2009 KickOff Event. Perhaps 3-4 concurrent media events statewide, connected with video conferencing. June – July: Local kickoff activities and recruitment efforts targeted for schools, businesses, community groups, and other organizations. June – July: SCEC intern teams assigned to each alliance region to develop 3D earthquake and fault visualizations as needed by each alliance. End of July: Completion of all campaign materials, drill manuals, PSAs, etc. including materials in multiple languages and for vulnerable populations. Proposed Timeline

10 August: Increase recruitment efforts for individuals and families. Encourage volunteers to spread word about ShakeOut (CalVolunteers?) September: National Preparedness Month- support preparedness activities and promote registration for ShakeOut. Announce CEA Mitigation program? Early October: PBS documentary airing and related promotion October 15: Great California ShakeOut 2009 October 15-17: San Francisco “Big Rumble” activities November 1: All participants emailed with updates and encouraged to keep getting prepared year-round. ShakeOut 2010 registration opened! November 15: Post-drill surveys completed December-March: Email ShakeOut registrants each month: share results and earthquake news, encourage preparedness and mitigation, etc., as part of broader statewide preparedness messaging and activities (Strategic Plan) Proposed Timeline

17 17 How Free-Choice Learning Venues can participate in the ShakeOut: –Become a distribution point for Putting Down Roots (e.g. develop a small distribution dispenser) –Conduct a drill with visitors to the museum on the day of the ShakeOut –Develop ShakeOut programming for visitors –Conduct staff development workshop on how the institution will participate Long term/sustained participation –Develop/enhance earthquake programming for visitors to the museum (e.g. floor facilitation, programs, summer workshops, educator professional development, etc) –Development/enhance earthquake programming for staff, administrators, and key partners of the institution Earthquake EPIcenters
