1 Tech Savvy Secondary School Technology Plan and Budget Summary Addressing Ethical and Social Issues Related to Technology Integration in School by Implementing Safety and Security Software and Professional Development Leena Ijhaish

2 Vision Tech Savvy Secondary School strongly believes in providing effective, multi-faceted and relevant technology use for students and staff. The use of technology will empower students with the tools necessary for personal enrichment, global and digital citizenship as well as academic success. Rich knowledge and useful technical skills will be the stepping stone for long-life leaning and future professional competitiveness.

3 School Demographics Administrators: Board members, superintendent, business manager and technical director. Administrative staff: Principal and an assistant principal for each school: ECE, elementary, middle and high school. HOD's and teachers: Arts, Music, Science, Math, Foreign Languages, English, P.E., Humanities and Social Studies, Computer Technology. Counsellors, curriculum coordinators, media coordinator, secretaries and librarians. IT and Technical Support staff: Director of technology, network specialist and desktop specialist. Support staff: Maintenance manager, photocopying clerk, cafeteria employees, cleaning and maintenance staff.

4 Project development team and their responsibilities Technology director, media Coordinator, principal, head of computer department, network and desktop specialist: Survey/market search for best educational safety/security software. Hire long term technology professionals and short term school technology consultants. Inspect security software through tests to evaluate efficiency and compatibility of network. Review files/messages/data stored in computers through monitoring to detect any tech misuse or academic dishonesty.

5 Superintendent, principals and assistants, curriculum coordinators, heads of department and technology director: Meet with parents and teachers to build awareness of acceptable use policy and academic integrity and honesty. Explain ethical use of technology to student in assemblies and in-class.

6 Media coordinator, librarians, vocational teacher, superintendent, principals, curriculum coordinators, IT director, head of computer department: - Provide PD sessions, workshops, webinars, guest speakers, seminars, on-line PD services, web-based tutorials, site visits and videoconferences to train teachers to teach acceptable use policy.

7 Summary of new technologies implementation into the curriculum Active: Active use of technology rather than passive (ethical and proper social use). Collaborative: Collaboration while using technology and not individual work. Constructive: Build understanding and not just receive through direct instruction. Authentic: real-life learning and hands-on problem solving skills' development. Goal-directed: reflect on work by setting goals rather than simply executing tasks.

8 Goals and objectives Project Goal: To optimize effective, secure and safe use of technology in schools through professional development & computer software and programs that censor, review and monitor files/data/messages stored in computers. Objectives: 1. Provide a secure and reliable safety network support in the school to enhance effective and ethical technology use by students. 2. Develop effective programs/curriculum to support ethical use of technology and media and educate students, employees and parents. 3. Expand professional development for staff to model acceptable use policy for technology, media and internet use in the school and integrate in curriculum.

9 Evaluation procedure for available software and professional development Inspect security software through tests to evaluate efficiency and compatibility of network. Review files/messages/data stored in computers through monitoring to detect any tech misuse or academic dishonesty. Check if academic integrity and honesty is being respected through verification of student work using programs that detect plagiarism. Monitoring and reviewing messages and files regularly. School seminars/discussions for students, staff and parents on AUP. Active implementation and application of AUP in the school verified by student performance and authentic work represented by academic honesty and integrity. Teachers integrate AUP in the curriculum and instruction which is observed through supervised visits by principals.

10 Additional resources needed for first year Government visits to support AUP implementation through professional experts and available government resources. International guest speakers' visits that could significantly improve AUP integration in curriculum and instruction. Community involvement when possible in order to share other schools' experiences and success stories. Visits from business related educational program distributors and developers to better deliver AUP in school.
