Universal Design Mrs. McCann A.H.S.- Interior Design

Universal Design The creation of spaces, information and objects that work well for a wide variety of users without separate or special design. U.D. is a/k/a Lifespan Design, Inclusive Design, Transgenerational Design or Design-for-All

U.D. responds to the fact that the human population is more diverse in ability and age today than at any other time in human history. It goes beyond “accessibility” to functionality.

Universal Design promotes the integration of features that enhance the experience of all users-Equitable Use. It promotes “best practice” rather than “minimum standards.”

Aging in Place As our population ages more and more people are inclined to stay at home and not enter retirement facilities. As people age their needs change, so making simple modifications to their home allows aging in place.

Certified Aging in Place CAP - Certified Aging in Place Specialist are available to help make suggestions and guide these changes.

Accessible Design Accessible Design focuses on ensuring that design does not limit use by people with some kinds of disabilities, most often mobility limitations. These design features are enforced by a “code” required by a government, either state or federal.

Low Physical Effort-The design can be used efficiently and comfortably, and with a minimum of fatigue. Size and Space for Approach and Use Appropriate size and space is provided for approach, reach, manipulation and use, regardless of the users body size, posture or mobility

Specific examples of U.D. please! Central air and heating in a building or home is controlled by a thermostat. The thermostat is often small and located high on the wall. A U.D. thermostat would be: – Located in the center of the wall – Large print temperature numbers in colors of red fading to blue – Universally understandable icons

Perceptible Information: The design communicates necessary information effectively to the user, regardless of ambient conditions or the user’s sensory abilities – Exit lighting in an airplane or theater – Illumination strips on stairs – Universal symbol for male/female bathrooms

Small changes can be made!
