5 5 Publishing : Access Models Comments % of STM articles, 2006 Author pays journals ~10,000 articles: mostly BioMed Central, PLoS, Hindawi 70% of authors believe they should not pay; others may pay for them, e.g. funding bodies <1% Sponsored articles 15-20% of journals now offer option (15+ publishers) Estimated 2,000 articles sponsored in total <1% Open archiving Most journals allow pre-print and/or manuscript posting Elsevier - 5% posted as pre-prints; 1% as manuscripts - 2% of total posted in institutional repositories NIH: less than 5% of authors voluntarily post 38% of researchers unwilling to post 5-6% Delayed access 1% at <6 months; 5% at 12 months; 1% at 18 months+ Primarily life and health sciences 7% Very low levels of interest and uptake by researchers after several years

6 6 How authorized users may use articles Professional use of articles Per current ScienceDirect licenses, authorized persons may: Access, search, browse and view licensed content Print or download articles, abstracts and records Make copies of results of searches of content Systematic reproduction, such as copying/downloading entire journal issues isn’t allowed *

7 7 How authorized users may use articles Scholarly sharing of articles Current ScienceDirect licenses allow: Transmitting excerpts of licensed content such as articles to colleagues for scholarly study or research Transmitting excerpts by email or in print (mailing, faxing) Colleagues need not be at an institute with a ScienceDirect license but must be personally known to the sender

8 8 How authorized users may use articles Coursepacks Academic or government institutes licensed to ScienceDirect: – Can incorporate into electronic coursepacks links to licensed content including full-text articles – Must make sure these courses are offered for academic credit

9 9 How authorized users may use articles Interlibrary loan (ILL) To fulfil ILL requests, academic or government institutes licensed to ScienceDirect can: – Print and mail, fax or scan for Ariel transmission articles from subscribed Elsevier journals – Do so on an article-by-article basis Each request must come from: An academic or non-commercial, non-corporate research library within the same country

10 10 How authorized users may use articles Use by library walk-in patrons Any institute licensed to ScienceDirect can: Allow walk-in users to access, search, browse and view articles in licensed Elsevier journals Allow walk-in users to print single copies of full-text articles for personal use Walk-in users may include the general public

13 13 How authors may reuse articles General use of articles Researchers publishing in Elsevier journals: – Can use their articles to support scientific advancement – Can do so without getting permission from Elsevier Each author may in print or electronic format: – Use an article for courses or classroom teaching – Share an article with research colleagues – Reuse an article in a thesis or dissertation – Present an article at a meeting or conference – Expand an article into a book for publication

14 14 How authors may reuse articles Web posting of articles Following publication of an article on ScienceDirect, the author: Can post the author’s own versions of the article on the author’s personal or institutional Web sites Must include in each posting a link to the journal home page Author postings aren’t for commercial purposes ScienceDirect preserves the official record of publication: In print On ScienceDirect In its official electronic archives

17 17 How anyone can use Elsevier-published articles Bibliographic references To cite an article in a bibliography: – An appropriate citation should be provided Quotes from articles To quote an article: – For one or two sentences, no permission is needed – Longer quotes require permission from Elsevier – permissions@elsevier.com

18 18 Reproduction of material from articles Anyone not an author of an Elsevier-published article and wishing to reproduce part or all of it: – Must obtain prior permission from Elsevier – May use permission form online at www.elsevier.com How anyone can use Elsevier-published articles

19 19 Photocopies of articles National copyright laws generally permit photocopying an article for personal use Elsevier requires permission and a fee for all other photocopying, including: Multiple or systematic copying Copying for promotional or advertising purposes Copying for resale Copying for all forms of document delivery Special rates are available for educational institutes needing copies for non-profit classroom use To request permission, use the form at www.elsevier.com How anyone can use Elsevier-published articles
