3. 1815 - Born in England. 1832 - Eyre came to Australia. 1840 - Eyre left Adelaide for central Australia. 1841- Expedition left Adelaide. 1841- Discovered the French ship and Eyre + Wylie reached Albany,western Australia. 1846 - Eyre became lieutenant – Governor of New Zealand. 1901 - Eyre died in England aged 85.

4. Born in England, 1815. Came to Australia aged 17 in 1832. His way was blocked by swamps and sand hills so he followed the Flinders Ranges to Mount Hopeless before turning back. Expedition set up to open up a trail from Adelaide to Western Australia Eyre was made leader of the expedition. The group was friend,Baxter,6 white men,3 aborigines( including his friend Wylie)13 horses, 40 sheep and three months supplies. It was very tough with not much water so the group split up. Eyre, Baxter, Wylie and two other Aborigines continued on with 11 horses and 6 sheep. The journey was hard because it was extremely hot with no trees or shelter along the Nullarbor Plain. Local Aborigines taught them how to dig for water and showed them how to break off roots and suck them for moisture.

5. They left their horses behind and had to use sponges to collect dew from plants each morning. Halfway along the journey it was winter and the nights were cold and horrible. They had to leave most of their clothing with the horses so it was very difficult to stay warm. Two Aborigines rebelled and killed Baxter and took all the guns and supplies. Eyre and Wylie travelled on together but had no water for a week. They survived on kangaroos and other wildlife. They met a French ship on the coast, so they had a rest for a couple of weeks. The captain gave them some clothes and food to take with them. The journey was easier and they arrived in Albany, WA in July 1841. They had travelled for 4 ½ months. Eyre was given a gold medal by the Royal Geographic Society. 1846 – He became Lieutenant-Governor of NZ and later on Governor of The West Indies. He returned to England and died in 1901. Lake Eyre and Eyre Peninsula are named after Edward John Eyre.

6. Taking Responsible Risks Edward John Eyre took responsible risks like going on expedition, but in particular, when had to trust some of the party to leave the expedition because they had too many sheep to bring along with them.
