2. Purpose of this session To update you about the progress of the formation of a new College of Teaching To engage you in the profession-wide debate about how to make this work for all teachers. 2

4. What would be in it for teachers? The Claim Your College proposal suggests the following although the members ultimately decide what this body will do for them. Professional Development Better access to high-quality professional development and learning A respected portfolio to show professional impact Guidance from a College Mentor Recognised by Schools Schools committing to access to professional learning and accreditation Schools committing to sector-led standards, peer-to- peer review Professional Knowledge Pooling knowledge of the best way to help pupils succeed Drawing upon academic research and making this available to professionals Contributing to a growing knowledge base to help all professionals Professional Standards Respected standards with validity and portability Accreditation against sector-led standards Career development opportunities 4

The College must be: 5 IndependentVoluntary The arbiter of the highest standards of evidence-informed practice Run by teachers for the ultimate benefit of learners Subject to a governance model that ensures no single interest group can dominate Trusted to act as an informed and single voice to represent the profession in debates on policy and practice

6. The College will benefit members by offering: Professional standards Professional development Professional knowledge Recognition by schools A common code of practice. 6

7. How will it differ from the GTC? Although they are interested to support, College of Teaching is NOT a government initiative and will be independent Membership will be voluntary It will be governed by its members to support them in raising standards of professional practice The organisation will focus on aspiration, development and recognition, not regulation and striking-off It will provide a point of stability through changes in policy and fashion. 7

10. Discussion point 1: Who should be supported through the College of Teaching? Who you do you consider to be ‘in the teaching profession’? What do you think the implications might be for your school (staff, governors, families) and the wider profession? How should non-school-based colleagues who play a role in ‘teaching’ be engaged with the College of Teaching and where should the balance lie between school-based and non-school-based colleagues? 10

11. Discussion point 2: How can teachers be at the heart of the College’s activities and leadership within existing workloads and priorities? How might practising teachers be freed up to contribute in different ways? Should the College work around teachers’ schedules in another way? How can we ensure that the necessary professional support and expertise are available to lead the College of Teaching forwards? 11

12. Discussion point 3: What is the role of the College of Teaching in relation to career development? Where should the balance of responsibility lie between teachers, schools, the government and the College of Teaching for ensuring that appropriate professional development is undertaken? The role of the College could be to establish an aspirational framework that recognises great teachers and supports continuous development – working towards making teaching a chartered profession. How might such a framework complement what already exists in your school? How appropriate would it be for the college to eventually take over the setting and upholding of teacher standards – moving this away from government? 12

13. Discussion point 4: The College will need to be a membership organisation, how do you see that working for you and your colleagues? What excites you most about the College of Teaching? What worries you? How can we collectively mitigate against that from set up? What might the differing priorities be for teachers in different roles and contexts? How does the evolution of the College of Teaching relate to what is taking place in your specific role and context? Should the College of Teaching accept support from Government and if so on what terms? 13
