2 Team What is a team?

3 Team Small group of people with complementary skills who are committed to a common purpose, set of performance goals, approach for which they hold themselves mutually accountable. A group of people is not a team. Examples?

4 Why teams? Two heads are better than one.
“We must all hang together or most assuredly we will all hang separately.” – Benjamin Franklin Synergy: the creation of a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Team building: Process of establishing and developing a greater sense of collaboration and trust between team members Team building involves more than throwing a few people together. Reading p.70 “Successful team working” Listening p.71 “Building a team”

7 Team building Five Stages of Team Development:
Forming: team members get to know each other. Storming: interpersonal conflicts begin to surface. Norming: team members settle differences with establishment of order and cohesion. Members feel closer together and the conflicts are settled, or at least forgotten. Performing: team members work well together. Adjouring/Mourning: team disbands following completion of its task.
