4 Definition of Fairy Tales These stories usually start with “Once upon a time”. This is a story that is fictional and sometimes unbelievable. Fairy Tales usually have good and bad characters, such as a princess (good) and a witch (bad). These are stories that usually end with “Happily Ever After”.

7 Definition of Myths A myth is an ancient story that is past through the generations to teach children about heroes and ancestors. It shows the views of how life use to be in the past and what the ideal society was. A myth also shows that some people use these to explain their customs.

10 Animal Tales Definition These tales are found in every culture and they usually give animals or objects human personalities and characteristics. Animal tales are sometimes placed in four areas. The first is etiological tale which is the Native American animal tale. The second is a fable which is a short story that proves to a point about someone or something. The third is a beast epic which tells a story in a medieval setting and time. The fourth is a trickster tale in which the main character is either good or evil.

13 Definition of Legend This is a story that was in the past and it seems to be historical. A legend is usually brought from the past and told in the present. These stories are similar to myths as well.

16 Definition of Tall Tales These stories are usually based on exaggerations about huge and unusual characters. Some characters in theses stories may have actually lived but most are fictional characters. Tall Tales have four features which are larger than life, a problem, exaggerated details, and everyday language.

19 Definition of Noodle Head Tales These stories usually has a character who seems to be a fool but wins against the other character. These stories can also sound true but are really general stories.

22 Definition of Ballads These stories are narratives of poems that are sung by music. They are usually simple to say and understand. Ballads usually have four or more verses in the poem or song.

25 Definition of New Folk Tales These stories are the updated versions of the older folk tales. Some are based on fairy tales but they don’t end as a fairy tale usually does. These stories usually give the other characters side to the story.
