Types of Assessment Tests Quizzes Affective Opinion Projects/Assignments Survey Formative Summative

Types of Technology Computers Internet Software Hand Held Calculators Data Probes Other Hardware

Using Technology Using technology to assess student learning, attitudes, etc. needs to work seamlessly within your class or it becomes burdensome and quickly abandon.

Computers & Internet Unless all students have a computer, it is very hard to use this technology as an in- class assessment tool. Therefore, without the computer, using the Internet is impossible as part of an in- class assessment plan. However, both computers and the Internet may take part in an overall assessment plan for any class.

Computers & Internet Using Blackboard –Administer on-line Quizzes/Tests/ Surveys/etc. so class time is saved for teaching –Results are available immediately for students –Post grades so students can monitor their progress in your class

Computers & Internet Use the Internet to assess critical thinking skills Use interactive web pages Use Internet interactive software Create or use WebQuests

Critical Thinking Have students locate various web resources on a topic Have them critically analyze the readings –Word Selection –Word Connotation –Tone of the Writing –Logic of Written Arguments –Interpretation of Numerical Data Written Assignment

Interactive Web Pages Sites with online, interactive quizzes, tutorials, etc. Sites where students input information and see the results Sites where students gather real-time information and use it in assignments Sites where students hypothesize and test conjectures

Interactive Web Pages Must have Flash Plug-in and browser must be Java compatible Find sites through search engines “interactive site” Good assignment for students to locate interactive sites for you [along with the ones you find]

Internet-Interactive Software Earth Browser

All types of science explorations Climate and indigenous people Population dispersion Impact of climatologically changes on people and wildlife And so much more…

WebQuests http://homepages.wmich.edu/~k5matko/quest/

WebQuests http://webquest.sdsu.edu/ An inquiry-oriented activity Information is drawn from the Web Focus on using information rather than finding it It supports thinking that involves analysis, synthesis, and evaluation

WebQuests

Computer Software Inspiration WWW Browsers Microsoft Office And many others…

Inspiration Venn Diagrams For Example:

Inspiration Directions

Inspiration Primates

Inspiration Trial of Antoine Lavoisier

Inspiration Build Concept Maps

Computers and Software Build databases of knowledge Develop multimedia reports Create photographic slide shows Demonstrate numerical relationships in a spreadsheet Build annotated bibliographies of Internet and print resources

Handheld Technology Palm, Pocket PC, etc. Calculators Data Probes Other Devices

Handhelds and Data Probes Obvious uses in science and mathematics Physical Education –Temperature Sensor –Distance Sensor –Accelerometer –CO 2 Gas Sensor –Exercise Heart Rate Monitor Art –Light Sensor –Colorimeter

Handhelds and Data Probes Psychology –EKG Sensor –Heart Rate Monitor –Respiration Monitor Speech –Sound Level Monitor Education –Sound Level Monitor - used in classrooms

Handhelds and Other Devices Assessing students with a handheld: –Develop quiz, test, attitude assessment, Likert scale survey, pre-test, etc. –Beam to students as they enter the room –Students complete the assessment –Students beam their responses to your computer on the way out of class

Handhelds and Assessing

Handhelds and Other Devices With Office to Go, students can work with Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint documents on their handheld Add a portable keyboard and the student has a full functioning portable computer Add a camera to the handheld and the student may add pictures and multimedia to their work products

Tracking with Handhelds Create a class list with a bar code for each student Using appropriate software, read the bar code for students who: –Are absent, –Make significant contributions to class –Volunteer –Or just about anything else you can think of recording Keep anecdotal records on your students in class

Handheld Software Download web pages to a handheld Free word processor with spell check, etc. Great free drawing program Create concept maps on a handheld

There are many more examples I could give, but for now, I must say… and thank you for attending!
