2  The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland covers an area of some 244 thousand square miles. It is situated on the British Isles. The British Isles are separated from Europe by the Strait of Dover and the English Channel. The British Isles are washed by the North Sea in the east and the Atlantic Ocean in the west.

3  The population of Great Britain is about 60 million. The largest cities of the country are London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

4  St. Valentine's Day, February 14. Saint Valentine is the patron of all lovers. On this day lovers give each other special cards ("Valentines"). St. David's Day, 1 March. Saint David is the patron Saint of Wales. This holiday is very important for the people of Wales that are at this day in the collar daffodils - the emblem of the country. St. Patrick's Day, March 17. The shield is divided into four parts, each of which are emblems of England, Scotland and the Irish free state. Around the shield on the blue ribbon label: "Let them be ashamed who badly'll think about it". Royal crown at the top of the shield symbolizes the monarchy in the UK. The lion on the crown is the symbol of power of the state. At the bottom of the ribbon shield inscription: “God and my right”

7  Every person from every country in the world recognizes this flag, but not everyone knows the history of the flag of great Britain as well as the picture. The flag of great Britain has a huge historical significance and symbolizes the Union of three countries: England, Scotland and Ireland. The British call their Union Jack flag (Union Jack), which means "Union flags.

8  Direct wide red cross on a white background, the so- called "cross of St. George" is a symbol of England, the patron of which was St. George.

9  White diagonal cross on a blue background is the cross of Saint Andrew, patron of Scotland.

10  Red cross diagonally on a white background is the cross of St. Patrick, the patron Saint of Ireland.

11  After the annexation of Ireland in 1801 on the flag appeared the red cross of St. Patrick.

13 Stonehenge is one of the most known attractions in England, being at the same time one of the earliest prehistoric European monuments. It was built on the Salisbury plain in 3000 BC and till now there only guesses, who and how created Stonehenge.

15  Visiting England you can’t see the Tintagel Castle, but only its ruins. This castle was built around 1240 year by Earl Richard of Cornwall. Now its ruins overlook the ocean sitting atop a high slate cliff. At the foot of the castle a beach lies, giving entrance to Merlin’s Cave underneath the rock wall. Tintagel Castle and its ruins are surrounded by the legend of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table.

16  Hadrian’s Wall building began in 120 AD. It reaches from the sea to the sea for 73 miles (almost 117 kilometers) across the northern England. The wall was commissioned as a boundary of the Roman Empire by Emperor Hadrian. At five-mile intervals across the entire expanse forts were built. Owner of the wall now is National Trust Hadrian’s Wall is in still good condition

17  Bath is a city named after the Roman baths built over hot natural springs in the I century AD. Many baths are in ruins still the visitors can acquire an appreciation for engineering of Romans. The city of Bath is famous for its wonderful Gothic and Roman architecture; its streets are full of talented artists and talented performers. Jane Austen Center, Bath Abbey, Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge are accessible for visiting

18  Warwick Castle is a monument of British history that is beautifully preserved. It is one of the most visited sights of England. The construction of the castle gradually changed from wood to stone throughout time. If you visit this castle, you can see ramparts and towers, the great hall, dungeons, Caesar’s Tower, state rooms, displays of armor and the gatehouse
