In the next two to three hours, you will be organizing your enVision Math teaching materials, viewing videos and materials from the Pearson website, and examining how the DoDEA Mathematics Standards are supported with these materials.

The enVision Math program is based on an approach to unit planning called Understanding by Design.
Now, let’s look at little closer at an instructional model that contributes to the success of the program—Understanding by Design. Understanding by Design, or UbD, was developed by Grant Wiggins. Who is Grant Wiggins? He is president of Authentic Education and is best known as a coauthor of the book Understanding by Design. Let’s take a few minutes to listen to Grant’s explanation of the basic principles of Understanding by Design. As you listen, reflect on the application of these principles in your own classroom.

The Pacing Guide – Your School Day is a flow chart that outlines and identifies the lesson components for daily instructional planning.
Have teachers open to a lesson-as I explain each part, they should look for examples within their lesson of choice.

The Pacing Guide – Your School Year is a chart that outlines and identifies the topics for yearly instructional planning. The timeline shows 140 daily lessons, 20 additional days for assessment, and leaves a teacher with approximately 20 days to provide reinforcement and enrichment activities.
Notice that the Topics are in different colors. Take a few minutes to locate a key that identifies the focus for each Topic area.
NOTE: The DoDEA Math Standards do not include all of the topics included with enVision Math at some of the grade levels. A correlation document is being developed to assist teachers with this issue. A date on the release of this document has not been released at this time.
