THE STORY The Two Advocates

THE STORY Who is Jesus? Above all, he is the savior, but what does that mean? How does Jesus become Savior? Who is the Holy Spirit? If Jesus saves me, who is this other person? What does he do?

THE EVENTS John 13-17 The scene is a farewell meal. “Yet a little while I am with you … Where I am going you cannot come.” (13:33) Peter: Oh no you’re not! (13:36-37) Thomas: We don’t understand! (14:5) Philip: Okay, show us! (14:8) Christ points to the Advocate (14:16-17)

ADVOCATE KJV: “Comforter” ESV: “Helper” NIV: “Advocate” Greek: “Paraclete” An advocate is one summoned to your side to plead your case before a judge. In the last lesson, Jesus was defeated our enemy on the battlefield. In this passage, Jesus speaks for us in a courtroom.

TWO ADVOCATES “another Advocate” The Holy Spirit is another advocate, like the first but somehow different. If you do not understand the work of the first, you will not understand the work of the second. The second follows the first, 16:7 The second represents the first, 14:18

THE FIRST 1 John 2:1-2 … But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins … We stand exposed before the bar of justice. In a sense, your Advocate becomes you. With Jesus, the plea for pardon is not mercy, but justice.

THE SECOND John 14:25-26 The First Advocate is speaking to the Father for you. The Second Advocates is speaking to you for the Father (and for you!). The Law is now on our side, because we are lost in our First Advocate. The Second Advocate helps us to see and respond to what the First Advocate has done (16:8-11).

TWO ADVOCATES John 16:12-15 Hear what the Second Advocate says about the First Advocate! Jesus is savior because he is our first advocate. You are a sinner – are you living with the humility and dependence on God that results from that fact? You are also righteous in Christ – are you living with the boldness and freedom that results from that fact?
