3 DISCOVER GEORGIA’S TREASURE! The mission of the University of Georgia Special Collections Libraries is to acquire, organize, preserve, and provide access to unique and rare materials related to the history and culture of Georgia. The Richard B. Russell Jr. Special Collections Libraries Building houses the Hargrett Rare Book and Manuscript Library, including University and Athletic Association Archives, the Richard B. Russell Jr. Library for Political Research and Studies, and the Walter J. Brown Media Archives and Peabody Awards Collection. This orientation will give you an overview of the building’s facilities and demonstrate how to use our collections.

5 WALTER J. BROWN MEDIA ARCHIVES AND PEABODY AWARDS COLLECTION Contains over 200,000 titles in film, video, audiotape, transcription disks, and other recording formats dating from the 1920s to the present. The Peabody Awards Collection contains nearly every entry for the first major broadcast award given in the U.S. The WSB News film Collection contains 5 million feed of film clips featuring raw news footage shot for news broadcast from 1949 to 1981 and spans the entire Civil Rights Movement Second Floor

6 THE HARGRETT RARE BOOK AND MANUSCRIPT LIBRARY Over 120,000 rare and small press books and broadsides 6 million original documents and images Georgiana Collection 1,500 maps from the 1500s-1900s Second Floor

7 THE RICHARD B. RUSSELL LIBRARY FOR POLITICAL RESEARCH AND STUDIES Over 300 collections documenting Georgia’s political history Comprehensive collection of Oral Histories, featuring Richard B. Russell, Dean Rusk, D.W. Brooks, Zell Miller, Sam Massell, Louise McBee, and many others Second Floor

8 VAULT The high density storage vault at the Russell Special Collections Library is located approximately 40 feet below the main exhibit level and is 30,000 square feet, divided into three rooms. The vault contains 24 rows of shelving that are 32 feet high and hold over 340,000 cubic feet of storage space. With two battery powered order pickers, the vault staff is able to retrieve any material requested by the staff and researchers in a matter of minutes. Climate control in the vault is kept at 50 degrees and 30 percent relative humidity, which provides optimal preservation of archival collections. No Access

9 READING ROOM AND CLASSROOMS The classrooms and reading rooms are located on the 3 rd floor of the Special Collections Library. Professors may conduct class in one of the two classrooms and have original materials pulled for students to handle. Additionally, researchers may request materials to be waiting for them in one of the reading rooms. Third Floor

10 AUDITORIUM The auditorium is located on the Second Floor and can seat approximately 200 people. The space is equipped with state of the art presentation equipment. Second Floor

12 CREATING A RESEARCH ACCOUNT To register for a research account, visit the Special Collections Research Account Login PageSpecial Collections Research Account Login Page If you are a student, faculty, or staff at UGA, please log-in with your UGA MyID If you are a first time user and not affiliated with the university, you will be required to register and enter your contact information. You will receive an email confirmation with your username and password.

13 REQUESTING MATERIAL 1.First, log on to your AEON account. 2. On the left side of your screen, please choose the specific library in which you wish to obtain materials.

14 REQUESTING MATERIAL After clicking on your specific library, use the keyword search to find materials. If you know the specific manuscript number, you may enter it as well.

15 REQUESTING MATERIAL Your results will then be listed in a separate window.

16 REQUESTING MATERIAL 1.After reviewing the results, choose the collection that you’d like to request. 2.You’ll then be taken to the collection finding aid, which give biographical information about the collection and lists the entire contents. 3. Click on the Request Material Button to the left of the screen

17 REQUESTING MATERIAL 1.After clicking on the “Request Material” button, a check box will appear alongside the collection items. Choose which (or all) of the items that you’d like to request to be pulled. 2.Then, click the “Request Material” Button on the left side of the screen.

18 REQUESTING MATERIAL Once clicking the “Request Material” button, you’ll be taken back to your AEON account. Here, you should see the materials you’ve requested.
