Computer Systems Peripherals

What is a peripheral? A peripheral is a device which can be attached to a computer processor Peripherals can be internal or external to the computer Peripherals can be classified as input, output or backing storage

Key Terms The key terms which you are required to understand about peripherals are Speed Capacity Accuracy Resolution Compatibility Cost Some or all of these can be measured depending on the device

Input Devices Keyboards Pointers Scanners Digital Cameras Digital Video Cameras Microphone

Wireless connectivity Many peripherals now have wireless capability You should be aware of recent trends in wireless input and output devices

Output Devices Ink Jet Printer Laser Printer Multifunction Printer Monitors

Backing Storage Devices Magnetic Disks Tape Optical Drives Solid State Devices

Keyboards and Pointers Different types of each device available eg Optical mouse, trackpad, rollerball Concept keyboard, ergonomic keyboard, modified keyboard Difficult to measure speed or capacity Costs vary considerably depending on the device required

Class work At the back of your Systems jotter write a glossary definition of peripheral In Microsoft word type up a paragraph to describe how each of these devices works Hard disk drive CD Re-writer USB Flash Drive Memory Card reader

Development Trends in Backing Store Capacity of backing storage has increased enormously in last 10 years Many new computers don’t have floppy disk drives Optical media is more durable Music and video storage on computers is now the norm

Practical Activity Use the internet to research and write a summary of the development trends in Backing Storage

Scanner The main points to understand about scanners are:- Accuracy – the bit depth and resolution Capacity – an internal buffer to store the scanned data Resolution – Number of dpi it can scan Speed – depends on type of connection

Digital Cameras Images are stored electronically and transferred to the computer Capacity – the amount of photos the camera can store – depends on the amount of memory and the resolution the pictures being stored Speed – depends on type of connection Resolution – number of dpi on each image Bit Depth – number of bits needed to store each colour

Digital Video Cameras Accuracy depends on quality of the source Capacity – memory card or tape Speed – depends on interface

Homework Task Use the Internet to research the latest trends in the following devices Complete a report which give details of 3 characteristics of each device Scanner Digital Camera Digital Video Camera Monitors (Wireless and TFT) Colour laser printer
