13 SCHOOL SAFETY CONCERNS AND IMPROVEMENT TRCS Rensizzle Architecture 2013 By: Jonathan, Melanie, Khalil, Abd-Elrahman,Ram Report Investigation Date: October 24, 2013

RATIONALE An architectural improvement in the school is good but may take a lot of time and resources to accomplish. As we make proposals for the improvement or redesign of the High School Media Center & other things that concern the school, we see the immediate need to address certain safety issues that students have observed. Our investigative group made this presentation as our way in making our school a safe and conducive learning environment.

Objectives To point out specific safety concerns or improvements through the pictures we took last October 24 th 2013. To give reasons why the items in the school are dangerous or needs improvement. To suggest ways to address the issues pointed out to our school administrators or custodians.

HERE ARE OUR…

Middle School Lockers This is just one of the several lockers along the second floor. Some lockers appeared to be locked but can easily be opened. There are books and notebooks and valuables that students store in their lockers. Unlocked lockers are open to theft. We suggest that these lockers must be professionally repaired by the manufacturer themselves as custodial work may not solve the problem Locked But Easily Opened

Broken lockers in the High School area These images depict some of the broken/deformed lockers of the High School. They take up unnecessary space and are practically useless since you cannot open them with out a crowbar. We suggest that the school staff pays to get locks inserted into these lockers so that they can be used by other kids who need a better locker.

Water fountain in the second floor This water fountain is in the second floor. The fountain on the right side doesn’t function/ the water doesn’t come out of it. This needs to be fixed so that it may service water for more students. No water!

High School Water Fountain This is on the 3 rd floor media center.` The water pressure is too low and water does not go up high enough. Some students would put their mouth on the spout. This is unhealthy and may cause sickness. We suggest that the water pressure should be adjusted. Too low

Ceiling fixtures This is in the kids playground area towards the high school exit. The boards are coming out from the ceiling and could accidentally fall. Our suggestion is to replace it or just put new ceiling boards up. Don’t Fall!

Middle School Girls Bathroom This is the middle school bathroom on the second floor. This door in the girls bathroom does not close and it doesn’t provide the privacy it is supposed to. We suggest that we get new doors so everyone can feel safe while using the bathroom. Cant Lock

Television blocking the 3 rd floor hallway These are TV. racks parked along the elementary hallway. This is dangerous because it makes the hallway narrower and difficult to exit during emergencies. We suggest that they be stationed to each class room or just use one empty classroom for all of the TV. racks. Hallway is Narrower

2 nd Floor Dangling Wires This is in the 2 nd floor near the staff bathroom. There awe wires coming from the ceiling going down. Students might play around with it or get their belongings caught up with it and may cause damage or accidents. We suggest that they be stapled/fixed on the wall. Ooops!....No heads inside!

Moveable Hoops This is near the playground area. It is dangerous because the paddings are thin and loose. The balls could hit people in the area when walking by. Students might also bump on the base or the pole. We suggest to just replace it with a more suitable hoop for the little kids who will be using it.

Low ceiling entrance in the TLC This is in the TLC on the second floor. The ceiling is way too low for some of the taller kids/teachers in the school. The bottom picture shows the bottom part of the same location. It has a worn out stairway and it is more likely that people will slip on these stairs. Our suggestion is to cover the top of the wall with a cushion so just in case someone tall bumps their head, it won’t hurt as much. We also would like if you change the coverings on the stair edges so that it prevents people from slipping.

Dangling Camera Cover This is a camera cover on the ceiling playground area towards the high school students exit. The plastic cover has sharp edges that is dangerous because it could fall on a child. We suggest that the school’s custodian take it down, and replace it with a new cover.

Dangling light fixture covers The first one is on first floor stairwell near 82 nd street entrance. The second one is on the 2 nd floor stairwell near 81 st street entrance. The dangling covers could fall on students and staff. We suggest to put in place, screw it together and check on it all the time.

Heavy speaker in danger of falling Basement on top of the door on the music room door. It is dangerous because if the vibration of the music would make it fall. We suggest they remove it if it’s not being used. If it is being used put a safety bar around the speakers or better yet replace it with new wall mounted speakers.
