2 Information on India General info….  India is the seventh largest country by area. It is approximately 3 287 590 square kilometres.  The population of India is over 1.2 billion people.  The most commonly spoken language is Hindi  India has a total water surface of 360, 400 square kilometres.  The main religions of India are Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism.

3 Information on India Main Industries…  India is home to the third largest fishing industry.  Has mining of coal, iron, magnesium as well as oil reserves. India is also involved in : -the automobile industry -computer technology -textile -animal husbandry( management and care of animals for profit; e.g. livestock such as cattle, pigs, chicken, etc.)

4 The Culture of India  India is a very diverse country with each district having different cultures…  Some main celebrations are…  Diwali- a five day celebration that represents the start of a new year.  Genesh Chaturthi- an eleven day festival that honors their god.  Holi- a two day festival that celebrates victory over evil.  India also has some dances such as Bharatanatyam, Kathakali, and Kathak. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =bhDVzJj3lKA

5 Popular Tourist Attractions  Taj Mahal  Built from 1632-1653  Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal  Height- 73 metres  Location- Agra, Uttar Pradesh, India  Taj Mahal is directly translated from Arabic and means “crown of palaces”

6 Popular Tourist Attractions  Kerala aka Keralam Keralam, is a state in the south-west region of India on the Malabar coast. Was a prominent spice exporter from 3000 B.C.E. to 3 rd century Kerala is one of the seven wonders of India

7 Popular Tourist Attractions  Hawa Mahal Hawa Mahal, is a palace in Jaipur, India. Built of red and pink sandstone Height- 15 meters Opened 1799 Was built by Lal Chand Ustad and Sawai Pratap Singh in the form of the crown of Krishna the Hindu god.

8 The food of India  Food locally grown in India are…  -rice  -tea  -grains(wheat, sorghum, millet, barley, corn, naan, roti, bhakri; etc.)  -jute  -coffee  -fruits( mangoes, bananas, jackfruit, papaya, starfruit)  -Many of the same food we locally grow( carrots, potatoes: etc)

9 Main ingredients used in cooking  -dried beans(mung beans, lentils, chickpeas)  -cardamom  -chili peppers  -cinnamon  -coriander  -ginger  -mustard seed  -garlic  -onion

10 UNIQUE COOKING METHODS  Zammin Doz  A style of cooking in which a hole is dug in the ground and the ingredients, placed in a clay pot, are put in the hole then covered with mud and burning charcoals  This process of cooking takes about six hours to complete

11 UNIQUE COOKING METHODS  Galavat  Galavat is the use of softening agents like raw papaya paste, pineapple, kachari, etc. to tenderize meat

12 UNIQUE COOKING METHODS  Dum  Dum literally means to steam. It is a method of cooking on a very low flame, with the ingredients inside a dough which then placed in a pot with the steam entrapped in the sealed container.  This method of cooking allows for all of the flavors of the ingredients to come out.

14 TRADITIONAL DISHES  Tandoori Chicken  A chicken dish marinated in yogurt, seasoned with tandoori masala, and cooked at very heat. Tandoori chicken is a highly popular Indian dish, traditionally cooked in a Tandoor(clay oven).

15 TRADITIONAL DISHES  Kebabs  A dish consisting of marinated meat threaded on a skewer and grilled. Any kind of meat may be used; cubes of fruit or vegetables are often threaded on the skewer as well.

16 TRADITIONAL DISHES  Modak  A sweet rice or wheat flour dumpling made with coconut, jaggery, nutmeg and saffron.  Can be prepared by steaming or frying

17 THE FOOD PATTERNS OF INDIA  A typical Indian will eat two full meals a day with substantial snacking in between.  Only the right hand is used in dining  Breakfasts include rice or bread, a pickled fruit or vegetable, and a dal dish  Snack foods consist of food similar to breakfasts and are consumed with coffee or tea  Dinner is the main meal of the day and usually includes at least one rice dish, a curried vegetable or meat dish, a baked or fried bread, a pickled fruit or vegetable, and a yogurt.  Dessert is usually served with fruit  Common beverages include water, milk, buttermilk, sugarcane juice, fruit juice and soda.  All courses of the meal are placed on the table at the same time  Guests are served first at mealtime.
