2  Versailles was the royal residence of France from 1682-1789  The palace started as a hunting lodge for King Louis XIII, built in 1624  His son Louis XVI expanded it and turned it into the palace  The palace was redesigned in 1676, 1742 & 1755  There were three men in charge of the first project: Louis Le Vau, architect; Charles Le Brun, painter and decorator; and Andre Le Notre, landscape architect PALACE OF VERSAILLES HISTORY http://www.linkparis.com/versailles.htm

3  During the Seven Years War France lost most of its assets to Great Britain putting them in debt by 4000 million dollars- this is the beginning of the French Revolution  When Louis the XVI became king, was redesigned, and additions were made for Marie Antoinette  In 1788 the government went bankrupt  October 6,1789 an angry mob marched into the palace demanding bread, and then stormed into the queens room  When the monarchy fell the palace went to the new government, royal furniture and art work was sold MORE HISTORY

4  Napoleon Bonaparte began the first work in restoration, which was continued by the new monarchy, Louis XVIII  In the 1930’s Louis-Phillip turned the palace into a museum  Art work and furniture was returned to the palace, by a decree in 1962  In 1986 the largest restoration took place involving 80 rooms  Because the building is so large only small area’s are open to the public BECOMING A MUSEUM http://www.flickr.com/photos/kbg-london/510039547/
