Aristotle “Rock Star Philosopher”

“Regimes sometimes are changed through force, sometimes through deceit. Force maybe used right at the beginning, or they may result to compulsion later on” (Aristotle, p. 154).

“Conflicts arise, then, not over small things but from small things—it is over great things that [men] engage in conflict” (Aristotle, 153).

How and When can they happen? In a time of peace or in war In view to the regime: revolution occurred to allow the government to change structure (a democracy to an oligarchy vice versa) Not in to the view: the system remains the same but those in power want to put it into their own hands. (oligarchy to a monarchy)

Why do Revolutions Happen? A regime becomes too large and the “balance” is set off Location: not enough resources to take care of the people Power struggle: Two individuals feel they have the right to rule. Aristotle does conclude that revolutions ALWAYS occur, “when those in power treat the multitude unjustly” (156)

Modern Types of Revolution Militant, Violent Changed used by a military or by force Ex: Russian Revolution Religious Revolution Revolts done by individuals concerning their faith Based on spiritual reform Ex: Protestant Reformation

Political Revolution Does NOT have to be violent Individuals push for change in the political system Ex: Tea Party in the United States Industrial Revolution Change in the way individuals do business Ex: Industrial Revolution in England (1750-1850)

If the citizens of Panem were to start a revolution than which revolution would occur? What keeps the citizens of Panem from rebelling? In a revolution, what is a major threat to the people? What types of leaders typically emerge from a revolution?

“When men are afraid, they get a better grip on the regime. Thus those who take though for the regime should promote fears—so that they will defend and not overturn the regime” (Aristotle, 163).
