Different Types of Governments WHO RULES?

ARISTOTLE  Greek philosopher  “Who governs the state?”  Three simply classifications based on members that participate in govt.  Autocracy  Oligarchy  Democracy

 Autocracy  A government in which one person has all the power.  Two types of Autocracy  Dictatorship  One leader with absolute control over citizens’ lives  If there is a constitution the leader has control over that too  There might be other branches but they too are subject to the leader’s wants  Monarchy  King or Queen rules the country  Comes to power through a family line  monarchies held all the power and had the final say (absolute monarchs)  Modern times they share power and are subject to the country’s constitution AUTOCRACY

 Oligarchy  Small group of people has all the power  Greek word  rule by few  Only a certain group has political rights  One social class  One race  Junta  small group of people usually military officers rule a country after taking it by force  Religious Rule  Theocracy  Is a government that recognizes God or a divine being as the ultimate authority  Religious law is used to settle disputes and rule the people  Modern Theocracies are usually found in countries where the population is strongly religious  Ex Iran and Islam OLIGARCHY

 Democracy  Citizens hold the political power  Two forms of Democracy  Representative Democracy  Citizens elect leaders to represent their rights and interests in government issues  Elected leaders do the day-to-day work of government the country  Ex.  Direct Democracy  No representatives  Citizens are directly involved in the day-to-day work of governing the country  Is hard on a large scale country  Best example is Greek city- state of Athens DEMOCRACY

 Anarchy  nobody is in control  A way to describe the human state of existence before any governments developed  Everyone looks out for themselves  Aka. Animals in the wild  Anarchist are people who believe others should be able to live without government ANARCHY
