1 Outcome: 1.1 demonstrate an understanding of the relationship between clothing choices and personal expression

2 * Clothing is an important part of everyone's daily needs. It can help you look your best, feel good about yourself and tell others a lot about who you are. In fact, clothing can help you express your personality, your values, self-concept and individuality as well. * However there are many other reasons for clothing, such as; physical needs, safety and security needs, love and acceptance needs, modesty, conformity, attraction, esteem, self-adornment, status and prestige, identification, individuality, personality, values, self-concept and body language

3 * Protection from weather – hot/cold climates * Maintain body temperature

4 * Clothing that keeps you safe from harm or injury. * Required safety gear for certain occupations.

5 * Wanted affection * The need to feel as though we fit in. * Standards of dress within society.

6 * Modesty: Covering the body according to what is considered proper by the society in which you live. * Conformity: Following or obeying some set standards or authority. * Peer Pressure: The force that makes you want to be like friends your age (peers). * Self-Esteem: A feeling of personal self-worth. * Self-Adornment: Decorating the body in some manner. * Culture: The beliefs and customs of a particular group of people.

7 * A way to express importance. * Where you are in life compared to others (achievements, ranks, athletic abilities) * Popular brands attached to celebrities. * Identification – Sports, Military, Religion * Individuality – Why to show creativity, set you apart from others (not conform). * Personality – Wearing clothes that express your traits!!! (environment, interests, friends)

8 * What qualities, standards, principles, and ideals you consider important or desirable. * What do you value the most??? * Self- Concept – Positive/Negative * First Impressions – Clothing is the first thing you notice.

9 * Take a look at the pictures given to your group and decide which clothing needs they represent that we just reviewed. * Then record (on loose-leaf with your groups names) the following questions: 1) Does everyone have the same basic needs? 2) How do clothes help you meet your physical needs? 3) Explain how peer pressure can lead to conformity. 4) Give an example of how clothing can express status and prestige. 5) Explain how your appearance can affect your self-concept. (Don’t‘ forget to use your word bank if you get stuck)

10 * Now take a look at your first individual assignment.
