1 The Commonwealth Institute: The New Design Museum Initial Ideas process Turner prize exhibition: James Richards Points of interest Focus on the visual display Surround sound filled the room Comfortable seating Simple designed seating Lush carpet, thick and soft on foot Dark room Limited seating Seated visitors stays for the longest High focus of the visitors on the film The film was the first piece displayed within the exhibition The sounds were inconsistent Visuals were abstract and involved lots of still images People that were standing didn’t move about Shadows formed from the walkway across the room The space was dark but still lit enough to see your surroundings Most people walked straight past the written information and just viewed the work Late Turner exhibition: J.M.W Turner Points of interest in the specified area Visitors spent less a maximum of 4 mins viewing the pieces Most people would slowly walk past a peer around the others viewing The people that did stand and view would stand far away and then move closer to the image to see the image as close as possible There was lost of discussion and talking between the visitors The visitors using headsets from the museum would stay for longer durations of time in comparison to people without People with headsets would more often be on their own The circulation of the space was irregular The age range of visitors was mainly over 40approx. There were no negative discussions with regards to the artwork (within earshot)

3 The Commonwealth Institute: The New Design Museum Initial Ideas process The future is up: In the majority of science fiction films, the focus of their concepts, set designs and story lines involves going up into space. So why not use this to create our futuristic museum experience. Many museums that I have visited to form my research, have had vast amounts of space above the visitors. High ceiling and huge domes form large areas of empty space. These could be used to create a new display space. This would be highly appropriate for the new Design Museums interiors, as there is a balcony system running around the building, leaving an open column of space running through the middle of the building. This would give the viewer the chance to see different things at different levels. With this, I want to create a new viewing experience from the ground level looking up. Points of interest The future is up (space) People that are seated stay to view pieces for longer Headsets/Headphones correlate with longer observation of artwork Headsets/Headphones correlate with minimal verbal conversation Comfortable seating correlated with longer observation Well lit spaces with lots of work created lots of verbal contact Vision was focus on the display in the dimly lit space Soft flooring created a comfortable atmosphere Futuristic films have a focus on bigger, taller, higher and metallic forms Dehumanisation is illustrated in futuristic films Dehumanisation is done within modern futuristic films Transcendence: This film had more focus on the use of Technology, and the progression that could be formed due to technology on the evolution of humankind. With this comes the loss of self awareness which caused a loss of boundaries. This filmed illustrated how technology could be taken too far and the Wars formed because of this. This was relevant within my psychological research and behaviour analysis. This film shows the poverty gap that is formed through the developments of technology in the future. The aim of the protagonist of the and the story line is that they all want to get up into space to the utopian society.

4 The Commonwealth Institute: The New Design Museum I intend to design a new display method for the new Design Museum using suspended pieces from their collection. With this will be appropriately design seating to work with this concept. The form of this seating will need a lot of research to look at the ergonomics, psychology and effectiveness of the seating. With this I intend to make is as educational and interactive as possible. These will need further research into the form of these concepts and how they will work. The concept of this whole design is that people will be able to lay back on this seating to look up at the suspended pieces. Through sound and interaction they will be able to hear about the products designer and the processes that surrounded the object. Initial Ideas process Site images by OMA, additions by me.
