2 1: Explores different media and responds to a variety of sensory experiences. Engages in representational play. Scale points 1 – 3 are based on the childs widening exploration of a variety of materials and response to a range of experiences Has 3 elements – basic exploration / basic response to sensory experiences / role- play

3 2: Creates simple representations of events, people and objects and engages in music making. Has 2 elements – simple representation (within art & role-play) / music making

4 3: Tries to capture experiences, using a variety of different media. Observations for scale points 1 – 3 should focus more on the childs actions than on the use of language Has 1 element – capturing experiences

5 4: Sings simple songs from memory. Has 1 element – singing Ability to remember tune and words (of chorus) are both important

6 5: Explores colour, texture, shape, form and space in 2 or 3 dimensions. Has 1 element – exploration Exploration is more purposeful than for scale point 1 Child should show through actions (and possibly speech) that s/he is developing creative purpose Purpose may change

7 6: Recognises and explores how sounds can be changed. Recognises repeated sounds and sound patterns and matches movement to music. Has 3 elements – recognises changes in sound / recognises sound patterns / matching movements to music Child needs time / opportunities for choice Speech may be used, although much may be communicated through actions and movement

8 7: Uses imagination in art and design, music, dance, imaginative and role-play and stories. Responds in a variety of ways to what s/he sees, hears, smells, touches and feels. Has 2 elements – use of imagination / responding in a variety of ways to sensory experiences Need to observe use of imagination in several of the 6 aspects Should be a more sophisticated response to sensory experiences than would be expected for scale point 1 – includes the ability to talk about feelings as part of the childs response

9 8: Expresses and communicates ideas, thoughts and feelings using a range of materials, suitable tools, imaginative and role-play, movement, designing and making, and a variety of songs and musical instruments. Has 2 elements – expression / communication Childs activities should indicate purpose and planning as aspects of creativity Child should be able to talk about intentions Care needs to be taken by practitioner as to the appropriate time to talk to the child

10 9: Expresses feelings and preferences in response to artwork, drama, music and makes some comparisons and links between different pieces. Responds to own work and that of others when exploring and communicating ideas, feelings and preferences through art, music, dance, role-play and imaginative play. Has 2 elements – expressing feelings and preferences / responding to own work and that of others Achievement of all aspects displayed through involvement, purpose and the developing ability to reflect and to make links and comparisons Expression of feelings and responses to own work may be indicated through actions Must achieve all other 8 scale points prior to 9
