2 Founding History Santa Ines was founded on September 17, 1804 by Padre Estevan Tapis The Indian name for the mission was Alajulapu Was the last mission founded in Southern California Mission Santa Ines was the 19 th mission founded in California Santa Ines was named after Saint Agnes of Rome

3 Location  Santa Ines located in the town of Solvang, 7 miles east from Buellton  Today, Santa Ines is located still in the town of Solvang  1760 Mission Dr., Solvang, 93464

4 Design/Layout The walls of the mission are made out of adobe. There was a neopyte housing area and a traditional quadrangle. There is a fountain in the middle of Santa Ines. There is also a workers’ quarters, A granary, workshops, a courtyard, a friars’ quarters, a cemetery, a church, and a bell wall.

5 Mission Life Native American Life The Chumash people lived in this mission. Their schedules are the same as any other mission schedules. At dawn, the church bells would wake up the Chumash tribe to pray and do mass at the church. After that, they would go eat breakfast. They would eat atole and drank hot chocolate. After they would eat breakfast, the Chumash people would do their morning chores. The children would help their parents or learn from the missionaries. Missionary Life The missionaries would teach the Chumash tribe to do their job and teach the children how to help their parents and do other jobs. All day long, the missionaries would help the Natives.
