The Lone Star State What does this mean to you? Where have you heard or seen these words?

3 Vocabulary Annexation: when territory becomes part of a larger country. Resolution: a decision. Legislature: a group of elected people who make new laws. Governor: a person elected as the chief executive, the main person in charge, of a state.

4 Texas was an independent country for nine years before it became a state in the U.S. That is why it was called… The Lone Star State.

Texans and others discussed the possibility of the United States annexing Texas.

Sam Houston did not feel that Texas should be a separate country. He wanted Texas to join with and become one of the United States (Annexation) Because……

What was one reason why he felt that way? Why didn’t some other people from the U.S. want Texas to be a part of the U.S.? Answers: He wanted it to happen. The U.S. Army protected its citizens. A U.S. postal system delivered mail to towns far and wide. Texas did not have enough money for those things. Some people wanted Texas to become a powerful country like the United States, Texas laws allowed slavery, and Texas had debt that the U.S. did not want to take on.
