Weather And Erosion Project By Taylor, Hannah, and Aaron

How was the Grand Canyon formed?¿? Activity 1

Erosion… Ice- Water freezes into cracks causing it to expand. Water- The Colorado River broke away rocks causing the canyon to form. Wind- Wind caused abrasion which made the canyon break down.

Volcanism When volcanoes erupt, the lava hardens and starts to form more land.

Continental Drift Continental Drift is when plates push together forming the land to move upward.

How did it happen? Activity 2

These are the steps… The river is starting to break away the Canyon. The river has completely broken down the canyon.

When did all this happen?¿? Activity 3

Time Line The Earth was formed about 5 billion years ago. 1.25 billion years ago the Bass Formation was formed. 1.25 billion years ago the Bass Formation was formed. About 1.2 billion years ago the first sedimentary rock was laid down. 1.2 billion years ago the Hakatai Shale was formed. 1.19 billion years ago the Dox Formation was formed. Between 1.25 and 1.1 billion years ago the Cardenas Basalts were formed. Between 1 billion and 825 million the Chuar Group was formed.

Time Line 550 million years ago the Tapeats Sandstone was formed. 540 million years ago the Bright Angel Shale was formed. 530 million years ago the Muav Limestone was formed. 330 million years ago the Redwall Limestone was formed. 300 million years ago the Supai Group was formed. 280 million years ago the Hermit Shale was formed.

Time Line 270 million years ago the Coconino Sandstone was formed. 260 million years ago the Toroweap Formation was formed. 250 million years ago the Kaibab Limestone was formed. The Colorado River caused the layers to break away. The Colorado Plateau help uplift the layers causing them to break down.

How the Grand Canyon was formed by the Colorado River over time?¿? Activity 4

This is how it was formed…

The Grand Canyon Activity 5

The Grand Canyon… Water erosion Wind erosion Layers

Differences and Similarities of the Grand Canyon and the Bryce Canyon. Activity 6

Similarities and Differences Similarities They both have the same colors. They both have layers. Differences The Bryce Canyon has more points. The Grand Canyon has less amount of ledges. Bryce Canyon Grand Canyon

Pictures of Erosion Activity 7

Pictures.. This is where water and wind erosion occurred. This is an example of running water erosion.

More Pictures… This is where water washed the dirt and grass away, leaving just the cement. This is running water erosion that ran down hill.
