1Daily Warm-Up Exercises Day 43 What processes can be observed in a stream table? erosion, transport, and deposition What causes weathering? Weathering can be caused by physical processes like ice wedging and thermal breakage. It can also be caused by chemical processes like when acid rain dissolves minerals.

2 Captions Exercise 3.2

3 Chuar Butte

4 Identify Grand Canyon Layers (Part 2, steps 1-6) Investigation 3 Grand Canyon Rocks

5 Important Tools Why would a geologist consider a bottle of acid and a hand lens two of his or her most important tools in the field? The acid is used to detect calcite in a rock. The hand lens provides a close look at the particles in a rock. Both help geologists figure out what kind of rock it is.

6 Identify Rocks  Turn to page 11 in your lab notebook and to page 9 in your resources book.  Which rock is at river level in Nankoweap Canyon?  rock 4  What kind of rock is rock 4?  limestone

7 Identify Rocks  Which rock is directly above rock 4 in Nankoweap Canyon?  rock 5  What kind of rock is rock 5?  limestone

8 Identify Rocks  Record the rock number in the ID column.  Record the kind of rock in the bottom half of the name column.  The layer name will go in the top half. Limestone 4 5 (layer name)

9 Check Your Work Limestone 4 5 Shale Sandstone 6 7 Limestone Sandstone 8 9 6 7 8 9 10 Limestone Shale Sandstone Limestone Sandstone

10 Layer Names  Geologists who have studied the Grand Canyon have given these layers official names. Many are Native American in origin.  The names are displayed on the next slide. Record them in the top half of the name column.
