Traditions and customs play a great part in the nation. There are no ‘national’ holidays as each state has jurisdiction over its holidays but in fact most of the US holidays are celebrated nationally. These are Thanksgiving, Independence Day, Christmas, New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Columbus Day and some others.

9 The most important holiday for americans is Independence Day
The most important holiday for americans is Independence Day. Independence Day is annually celebrated on July 4 and is often known as "the Fourth of July". Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom. Activities associated with the day include watermelon or hotdog eating competitions and sporting events, such as baseball games, three-legged races, swimming activities and tug-of-war games.

There are also very interesting Day - Columbus Day! Columbus Day, which is annually on the second Monday of October, remembers Christopher Columbus' arrival to the Americas on October 12, But Columbus Day celebrations are controversial because the settlement of Europeans in the Americas led to the deaths of a very large proportion of the native people.

12 The American Thanksgiving began as a feast of thanksgiving almost four hundred years ago. In 1620, a religious community sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to settle in the New World. They settled in what is now known as the state of Massachusetts. In the autumn of 1621 they got a beautiful harvest of corn, barley, beans and pumpkins. The colonists had much to be thankful for, so they planned a feast. On Thanksgiving Day, family members gather at the house of an older relative, even if they live far away. All give thanks for everything good they have.
