Also known as “Turkey Day” Thanksgiving in the U.S.Also known as “Turkey Day”
Thanksgiving Day is the fourth Thursday in November. It is a national holiday.Thanksgiving was the first holiday celebrated in America. It was initially a way of giving thanks to god, and then to the Indians for their help.
The first Thanksgiving was in 1621 when the pilgrims invited the Indians to a three-day feast to celebrate the successful autumn harvest. The pilgrims were having trouble growing and catching food, so the Wampanoag Indians helped them.Squanto, a Wampanoag Indian, taught them to grow corn. The tribe also donated food to them when they ran out of supplies from England.
Today, families celebrate Thanksgiving by eating turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, yams, corn, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pie.
The tradition of eating turkey on Thanksgiving was created because there were so many wild turkeys in Plymouth Colony for the pilgrims to hunt.
