Positive & Negative design

Shape/Form: An element of art, it is an enclosed space defined and determined by other art elements such as line, color, value, and texture. In painting and drawing, shapes may take on the appearance of solid three- dimensional object even though they are limited to two dimensions — length and width. This two-dimensional character of shape distinguishes it from form, which has depth as well as length and width.element of artspace linecolorvaluetexturepaintingdrawingthree- dimensionalobjectlengthwidthtwo-dimensionalformdepth Geometric: mathematically defined Organic: not mathematically defined….often amoebic

Exercise 1 Use drawing sketchbook Find 3 examples of geometric shape within the classroom and sketch Find 3 examples of organic shape within the classroom and sketch Make sure you are capturing the complete shape image….give details!

Pattern: The repetition of any thing — shapes, lines, or colors shapeslinescolors There are ten classes of patterns, each with a particular function, that make up the entire physical world — natural and human-made — at all scales: functionscales spheres mosaicsmosaics or nests lattices polyhedra spiralsspirals — helixes and voluteshelixesvolutes meanders branching and circulation waves symmetry fractals

Pattern

*fractals: A geometric pattern that is repeated at ever smaller scales to produce irregular shapes and/or surfaces that cannot be represented by classical geometry. Every part at every scale of a fractal mirrors the whole. Discovered in the pursuit of chaos theory in the late twentieth century, fractals are used especially in computer modeling of irregular patterns and structures in nature.geometricpatternscalesshapes surfacesrepresentedclassicalchaosmodelingstructuresnature

Exercise 2 Use drawing sketchbook: divide page into quarters Create the following patterns: *geometric shape/organic shape/hybrid shape *alternating colors *line variations *hybrid of shape, color and line

Texture An element of art, texture is the surface quality or "feel" of an object, its smoothness, roughness, softness, etc. Textures may be actual or simulated. Actual textures can be felt with the fingers, while simulated textures are suggested by an artistelement of artsurfacequalityobjectsimulated

Exercise 3 Use drawing sketchbook: divide one page into quarters Find the following textures on objects in the classroom: *smooth *bumpy *fuzzy *wood grain Draw an up-close view of the object with particular attention to the texture

Space: space - An element of art that refers to the distance or area between, around, above, below, or within things. It can be described as two-dimensional or three-dimensional; as flat, shallow, or deep; as open or closed; as positive or negative; and as actual, ambiguous, or illusory.element of arttwo-dimensionalthree-dimensionalflatdeepopenclosedpositivenegativeambiguousillusory

Positive: Space in an artwork that is positive — filled with something, such as lines, designs, color, or shapes. The opposite of negative space.Space positivelinesdesignscolorshapesnegative space

Negative Space: Empty space in an artwork, a void. That's the usual definition. To some people, this term suggests unpleasant things. Sometimes when we say "negative" we mean "bad." Both "space" and "emptiness" suggest a lack, a shortage of something. This is unfortunate. The concept of negative space is one that deserves to be highly prized. In Japanese art tradition, what we call negative space is called ma. Relevant in every Japanese art form, from sumi-e to ikebana, ma is considered a particularly valuable sort of space, not seen as negative or empty.spacevoidJapanese arttraditionsumi-eikebana

Exercise 4 Using your drawing sketchbook, please divide your paper in quarters On a piece of index card, draw an original shape no larger than an inch and cut it out Using the index card as a template, create a design in the first quarter Fold paper and copy the design into the next 2 quarters In the first quarter, color each shape using only one color marker In the second quarter, color the background using only one color In the third quarter, vary background and shapes that are colored using only one color

Balance Balance:A principle of design, balance refers to the way the elements of art are arranged to create a feeling of stability in a work; a pleasing or harmonious arrangement or proportion of parts or areas in a design or composition. Portions of a composition can be described as taking on a measureable weight or dominance, and can then be arranged in such a way that they appear to be either in or out of balance, or to have one kind of balance or another. Balance can be symmetrical, or formal; or it can be asymmetrical, or informal. It can also be radial.principle of designelements of artharmoniousarrangementproportiondesigncompositionmeasureableweightdominancesymmetricalformal asymmetricalradial

Symmetrical: inkblot or ink blot - An image formed by dripping ink onto a piece of paper, and then folding the paper in half. Inkblots are invariably symmetrical, but making them is largely aleatoric, their shapes depending greatly upon accident or chance. Painted versions of inkblots are called blotto painting. In psychology, inkblots have been used in the Rohrschach testimageink papersymmetricalaleatoricshapesaccidentblotto paintingRohrschach test

Problem to solve: How can you create a design that incorporates positive, negative and illusory or ambiguous space in the form of a mandala or inkblot?

Requirements: *Use organic and geometric shapes *Use black sharpies *utilize either an inkblot design or mandala design *Use positive, negative and illusory/ambiguous space in the composition *utilize interesting patterns & textures *Must incorporate fractals
