4 How does Britain enter India?
Through affiliation with the British East India Company. India is diverse with many religions and vast array of culture (tribal heritages).

5 British East India Company
Trading company that provided “Britons” with goods. (spices, textiles, tea.) Had a MONOPOLY over the country. No one else could trade with India!! Main goal: $MAKE MONEY$

6 “The Company” runs india
By 1850, controls 3/5 of India. India is weakened by diversity. Many cultures/religions. Cannot stop the company. Instills western education and government. Use of SEPOY’s as a fighting army. Sepoy – Native Indian fighting for the British power . Have you heard of this “Company” before….think about a popular movie trilogy that debuted in 2003….?

7 Yo Ho, Yo Ho…. A Pirates’ life for me
Pirates of the Caribbean Fictional: “East India Company”. Movie depicts the Company going after pirates who are slowing down their business. “Captain” Jack Sparrow is condemned to hang for crimes against the crown.

8 Pro’s and con’s of the Company’s rule
The Good Built Roads Worked to end slavery within the CASTE SYSTEM. Caste – A specific group you fall into from birth. (I.e. class of society) Also ended SATI -- widow being burned after husbands death. The Bad Forced religion on Indians. Not aware of natives’ culture. View Indians as unable to peacefully rule themselves.

9 Sepoy Mutiny March of 1857 Mistakes and MUTINY
Forgot about certain Indian customs/culture. Company’s policies offend some Indians. Sepoy Mutiny March of 1857 New ammunition cartridge laced with cow and/or pig fat MANGAL PANDEY (Indian Hero) Hinduism – Cow is sacred being. Islam – Pig is revolting and is not eaten. Indians v.s British >>>>> British stop revolt!!

10 Mangal Pandey is a sepoy fighter.
Leads the mutiny against “East India Company”. Executed in April of 1857 – National HERO

12 Parliamentary Rule British government steps in and takes control from East India Company after mutiny. Parliament sets up a colonial government. Viceroy – Rules India, follows British orders. [Makes India an extension of Britain] !!DIRECT RULE!! Very “Unequal Partnership”

13 India Today Indian Nationalism 1930-1940’s
Mohandas “the Mahatma” Gandhi campaigns for independence. 1947 ends British rule. Muslim extremist unrest. India split up…. India -- Hindu Pakistan -- Islam India 2010? Soon will be the world’s largest economy.
