Bell Ringer Do you do your own laundry? If so, do you sort your clothes and read labels before you wash them? NOTEBOOK CHECK- 10 stamps starting on 12/8

HOW TO SORT, DRY, REMOVE STAINS AND READ LABELS Laundry Notes

Sorting Four ways to sort Dark colored clothes Light colored clothes Whites Towels and sheets Heavy items such a several pairs of jeans should also be washed separate from light weight items

Read the labels If you are unsure on how to properly wash or dry an item, read the label. Look for what cycle to wash on (delicate, hand wash), what temperature (cold, warm) and it is says “with like colors”. Also watch for “do not bleach”, wash inside out To dry, look for dry flat, hang to dry, remove promptly and what heat to dry the item at

Stain Removal Remove stain while it is still fresh or as soon as you notice it. Washing and drying an item that is stained will set the stain Ink: Use rubbing alcohol and rinse thoroughly Blood: Soak in cold water for at least 30 mins but as long as possible and use a pre treatment stain remover. Do not use chlorine bleach Ketchup: Rinse with cold water, use liquid detergent then use white vinegar and rinse

Stain removal Gum: Put item in the freezer until gum is hard and scrape off. Saturate what remains and pre treat with stain remover Lipstick: Saturate spot with hair spray. Leave on for 10 minutes and dab, don’t rub, with a damp cloth to remove Grease: Rub with dish soap before washing

Laundry Products Most common error is using too much laundry detergent Increase the amount of detergent if: Clothes are heavily soiled or it is a large load Fabric softener gets rid of: wrinkles and static electricity Two types of fabric softeners: Liquid and dryer sheet

Doing the wash CHECK POCKETS!! Items must be able to move freely Adjust water level to the size of the load Add the detergent FIRST before the clothes Do NOT pour chlorine or color safe bleach directly onto clothes Do NOT wash colors in hot water, they will fade Hot water is best for: Whites and towels/sheets Cold water is best for: darks and delicates

Drying Most of today’s fabrics are on the permanent press setting Delicate is used for heat sensitive items Overloading causes: wrinkles and uneven drying Remove items immediately or they will wrinkle CLEAN THE LINT FILTER AFTER EACH USE- fire hazard

Coin Up Laundry What you will need Basket for folded clothes Laundry detergent Stain remover/bleach Dryer sheets Hangers Quarters/money If bacteria is a concern, wash white items first. The hot water will kill the bacteria
