2 Brooklyn Public Library After attending a seminar for artists to create programs at the Brooklyn Public Library, the workshop/seminar idea for middle school students to prepare for the NYC High School Art Exam was developed. Photography by Mary Rieser Heintjes

3 Workshop/Seminar to Prepare the Students for the Art Exam 2:00 - 4:00 PM June 7, 2008 Instruction on drawing the still life then 15 minute drawing session Instruction on drawing the model then 15 minute drawing session Instruction on creating a design idea then 15 minute drawing session **** stretch out **** Quiz on art vocabulary distribute and take home with answer key Prepare for the verbal interview informal discussion while Portfolio Development presenting each student with case - Instruction on Portfolio preparation - Colorful Paper Mat and Label each art work as noted by each school - Add Artwork, resume, poems, Student drawing by LMH: 4” x 4” pencil on paper

19 Prepare the Portfolio: Include all genre of work: Landscape, figure, portrait, still life, abstract, architecture, design All mediums : Pencil, watercolor, pastel, crayons, ink, charcoal, markers, guoache, gel pen, textures… Use technical knowlege: Perspective, chiaroscuro, shading, photography, collage, color…. All student work for portfolio development: by JF Drawing to scale of masters art 14 x 17, pencil on paper Completed watercolor of master copy 14 x 17 on paper Watercolor and ink study of perspective from scene in Brooklyn 14 x 11 on paper Pen and ink study of portrait drawing 11 x 14 on paper

22 Prepare the Portfolio for the Art Exam Encourage independent work at home Student art work by LKH: 10” x 8” Study of a horse in motion-summer project using clay and wood CAN INCLUDE PHOTOS OF SCULPTURE DONE BY THE STUDENT IN THE PORTFOLIO

24 Choose the best 16-20 completed art works that expresses your potential and spirit to include collages, watercolor, drawings. Add poems, art photos, creative writing as well. In portfolio presentation binder provided: -Type print your name, school, contact # on adhesive large label for the exterior -Prepare resume for insertion on first page, include community service, interests, awards -Label each art by name, medium, title & done “independently” or“under supervision” PORTFOLIO ASSEMBLING INSTRUCTION Include CV Label art Portfolio Name Add Poems

25 Prepare the Portfolio and for the Art Exam ALWAYS KEEP RESEARCHING AND DEVELOPING: Color Theory, Shading, Perspective, Art Definitions, Skeleton, Muscles, Gesture History of Art FROM FIRST CAVE DRAWINGS TO MODERN TIMES Abstract design, Surrealism, Cubism, Photography, Architecture, etc AND IF YOU WORK HARD AND KEEP FOCUSED you will accomplish great things in the future with all your goals and endeavors ALWAYS DISCOVER NEW THINGS ABOUT ART JOURNAL - PURCHASE A DRAWING JOURNAL AND DRAW EVERYDAY EACH PAGE TO BE A COMPLETE RENDERING GET BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY - 3rd Floor of Central Library has ART & MUSIC WING READ THE NEWSPAPER OF ART EVENTS READ THE GALLERY GUIDE GO TO MUSEUMS AND ART GALLERIES EVERY FRIDAY 4-8 PM FREE AT MOMA EVERY FIRST SATURDAY IS FREE FROM 5 - 11 PM AT BROOKLYN MUSEUM READ BIOGRAPHIES OF ARTISTS
